I took a closer look at the illustration that InlinePaul provided. Why does the "Super T10 Wide" appear to have essentially the same ratios as the "T5 Close Ratio," at least through the first four gears? For that matter, why is the "Muncie Wide Ratio" even closer than both?

I noticed similar inconsistencies.

Keep in mind that it's all relative. There are no standards for defining wide vs. close. You compare to another transmission or to your own opinion. The Muncie wide ratio has wider ratios than the Muncie close ratio. The T5 close ratio has closer ratios than a T5 wide ratio (which was not on the chart).

The one that really seems weird to me, though it may be a trick of the eye, is the T56 wide vs. close ratio, they seem to have similarly-spread ratios, just with an offset compared to each other. That 2<->3 spread is wider for the "wide" one, but then the "close" one has a way bigger gap for 4<->5.
