How Often Do You Use Your Parking Brake? (no slushbox votes)
PLEASE DON'T RESPOND WITH RESPECT TO A SLUSHER!
I use my parking brake most of the time. The only times I leave it off are when I park in front of my garage where it is very flat and the truck could be out of gear with no parking brake and not roll. I always use it on slopes which is my usual lower driveway parking spot, and on flat locations in public for fear that if someone smacks into my truck I would rather the force be distributed to the parking brake than the gearbox.
Also I always set the parking brake before putting it in gear, as opposed to sticking it in gear with engine off and then setting the parking brake, because that way there is tension on the gearbox. Now this probably makes no difference but it gives me a sort of peace of mind (false or otherwise).

Always! First gear/parking brake every time I park, even on flat roads.

It would be always but I answered most of the time because when parking after a car wash, rain or snow (basically whenever the rotors are wet) at my house, I might not use my parking brake because my brake pads stick to the rear rotor. Its a VW thing.

But then you miss the excitement of dumping the clutch in an attempt to break them loose!daleadbull wrote:It would be always but I answered most of the time because when parking after a car wash, rain or snow (basically whenever the rotors are wet) at my house, I might not use my parking brake because my brake pads stick to the rear rotor. After the parking brake broke on my 1977 F100, being young and poor, I didn't fix it. As I parked on a sloping driveway and the engine compression was not the greatest, I would find my truck down at the sidewalk in the morning. You could stand there and hear the hiss of the combustion chambers leaking down and watch it periodically jerk as it made its way down the driveway. Ah the fun we had when we were young! I started carrying a piece of firewood so I could chock the tire when I parked because it is illegal to block the sidewalk.

Parking brake and no gear on flat. Both on an incline.
Used to be just gear only for a few months when the parking brake cable snapped on my GTO.

I put other because not only do I use the hand brake every single time that I park the car (long with first gear), but I also use when I am stopped at lights. Foot brake is for bringing the car to a stop, hand brake is for keeping it there.

All the time. My parking brake was broken for a while so I would park in 1st gear on the flattest surface I could find, but whenever parking brake is an option, I use it.

My car forces me to park in reverse to take out the key, so Im always in gear. I use the parking brake on any decent incline. I had no parking brake for well over a year, so I had to park carefully.

Most of the time I use parking brake in gear. However, sometimes I have a brainfart and only park in gear. I generally try to allow the car to settle into whatever gear I'm parked in (always the gear I will need first thing) then I set the parking brake.
Can you then move it to a different gear with the engine off?watkins wrote:My car forces me to park in reverse to take out the key, so Im always in gear.
Re: How Often Do You Use Your Parking Brake? (no slushbox vo
I always park in gear, but only use my parking brake when I'm not parked on a level surface. My garage is level, so I really don't use the parking brake in the garage. The parking lot at work is also level, so again, no parking brake. I'd estimate that 90% of the time I'm parked on level ground.
BTW, when I purchased my Audi, I noticed that most people who work at the dealership tend to park in neutral with the parking brake engaged. I'm not a big fan of that practice. If anything, I think having the car in gear is more important than having the parking brake engaged.
