It's probably different for each car. I wonder if it was always on the same side of the steering column, too.

Maybe that picture was from the UK. All the column-shift cars I ever saw were on the right side of the "tree", just like column-shift slushbox in LHD vehicles.

well just make the picture a mirror image. left hand drive in an instant!

i've always wondered how weird that would feel. clutching with my right foot and gas\braking with my left. when i was little i thought RHD cars had opposite pedals. god i was (read am) so stupid

I've never actually been in a three-on-the-tree equipped vehicle, but my dad told me all about it, as did John's dad.
My dad has a few really interesting stories. John's dad told me about the time he went to shift and almost broke his hand on the windshield when the linkage came apart in his hand. He went from shifting, to holding the handle... seperate from the rest of the linkage.

Ah... Going from zero to seriously f**k over in less than three seconds. Bliss? No. Excellent chance of having an ischemic event? Probably. Not going anywhere unless you rip the column apart? 100% guarantee.
