How to get started as a valet?
Can you even do it in this economy? I got a valet job a few months back. They ended up sticking me at some hospital in the ghetto. So much for "big $$$ for working nights on the weekend", I wasn't even allowed to ask for tips. Valets and ex-valets of the forum, how did you get started? Did...

Re: Tipping
I've worked for tips and know what its like. So, when I receive at least decent or good service I'm a good tipper, usually 20-25%. However, that doesn't mean I'll be sympathetic to the point that I'll let certain things slide. Some things are just unforgivable, like "basic, just do your job&quo...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi
Driving the Sonic today, I just realized that it has about the same 4th gear as 4th in my old 86 Fiero, and 5th in my old MR2
And it has 2 more gears beyond that, too

Re: New cars that no longer offer manual transmission
Its common knowledge that fools with too much money don't like amish transmissions , they want an expensive refined piece of technology to shift for them, like a SMG. Manuals are actually gaining popularity, especially with economy cars and hot hatches. Its one reason I bought my Sonic....orig...

Re: 2-3 shift path
Diagonal for every shift except for 4-5 and 5-4. For those shifts I'll actually follow the H-pattern to keep from mis-shifting. It works, I've never shifted 5-2 by accident. I consider it a vestige of learning on a 4-speed manual, I consider 5th gear as a final gear so I never have to shift very qui...

Re: What influenced your interest in manual transmissions?
Peer pressure. Friends of mine said automatics were slow and a waste (of gas), and driving slush doesn't really impress girls . I had sports cars that were automatic and I wanted a manual, it was as simple as that. Two years before that, I wasn't a car guy at all, so I didn't really have a lon...

Re: NJ cracking down on left lane idiots
If every state and municipal government enforced this as well as speed limits like 1/2 of traffic would be resolved

Re: Do you use a locking gas cap?
I don't have any angry ex's or anything....so no reason to have a locking cap . Car's also in the garage a lot of the time anyway.

Re: What's the worst mpg you've gotten?
10-13 mpg in my MR2 Turbo. While hooning it got worse mpg than my Camaro Z28 ever did. The Camaro, even with a 5.7L V8, got around 15-16 at worst (track days). The MR2 would bottom out around 13 mpg if you went WOT just a few times per tank. It didn't help that it had turbo lag out the ass (had to r...

Re: Longevity calculator
In other words, this measures how boring your life is. And of course, for me, it says I'll live to be 67 . I don't want to be old anyways. Seriously, who WANTS to be 90? Edit: just so you know, if you answer every question "right" to max out the results, the most you get (as a dud...

Re: Haven't driven an automatic for a year!
IMO the only times that an automatic is better is in a luxury car or SUV. Economy car, sports car, p/u, etc, are all better in stick. I haven't owned an automatic in several years, and its been almost 2 years since I've driven one. When I DO drive one I can't get over how boring and sluggish it alwa...

Re: Great pain in clutch foot--still driving though
I've never had problems with my clutch leg/foot, but I've had something just as bad.
Try blowing out the muscles in your lower back, and trying to drive stick. Its not fun. Every shift is excruciating.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi
Let me put it this way, maybe its easier to understand. Consider SS forum to be like a pub/bar. Now back in the day when it first got started, it was a fun atmosphere and everyone was welcome. Now there's 1 group who's always there and dominates the pub, and to be there you have to associate with t...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi
SS really isn't as active as it used to be back in '09 or so. I think more people have left over the years than joined. It also seems that most come in to ask a few questions in regards to driving a stick but won't stick around. I wonder if any more of the SS meets will happen. We had a consecutive...
