Yes we do, but that's like saying we need more perfect people in this world. I would settle for merely good people, and merely manual cars :-)

Re: Industry getting closer to phasing out manual transmissi

"more sporty cars" doesn't necessarily mean better performance. Sporty can include fun at the cost of performance, and can even mean just styling. And if he meant to say "fun" instead of "sporty," then he seems to be conceding that manuals are more fun to drive than au...

Re: State of the Stick

Sonofabiscuit. I like the Escape too, but think it's offered with a manual, although I've heard that the 1.6 turbo offers one. I wouldn't want to try and deal with a turbo though. Are there any other options that I could look at in several years? Are you looking for an AWD SUV with stick? Pickings ...

Re: Industry getting closer to phasing out manual transmissi

Interesting read, but it seems like the Audi official is contradicting himself a little bit. First he says: "the automatic gearbox has surpassed the manual gearbox in every way possible, including being able to provide better fuel economy and performance." Then he says: "Manual gearbo...

Re: Rod vs. cable actuation

Thanks guys. Foundational question: are rods and cables the things that connect your shift lever to the gears? So if you have rods, then I guess the lever pushes the gears into place, and if you have cables, then it pulls them? If that's true, then I can kind of understand why rods would transmit mo...

Re: State of the Stick

My next vehicle might be CX-5ish or something similar if I can find it with a manual. The CX-5 is available with stick, but only in FWD base trim with the smaller engine option. I found it to be underpowered with poor clutch feel when I test drove it, but otherwise, I would really enjoy the novelty...

Re: Here's what's really killing the manual transmission

However, buying a stick-only model sends the message that "I like stick or I will at least tolerate it to get the car that I want." Buying a manual vehicle offered both with manual and auto says very clearly "I will struggle to find the manual transmission because I do not want to to...

Re: Here's what's really killing the manual transmission

Remember that manuals started losing popularity ages ago, back when automatics were more primitive than they are now, and when they were a drain on acceleration and fuel efficiency. In other words, U.S. consumers preferred even crude automatics that guzzled more gas and performed a bit worse than th...

Sounds like a manual Mazda CX-5 I once test drove. Very numb feeling to the clutch.

Rod vs. cable actuation

This Popular Mechanics article titled "10 cars worth waiting for" makes passing reference to the 2015 Subaru STi's rod-actuated gearbox, contrasting it with the WRX's cable-actuated system. What is the difference, and what kind does my 2013 Honda Civic Si have? Excerpt from article: "...

In Skyfall (and Goldfinger before that), the shifter in Bond's Aston Martin DB5 flips up to reveal an ejector button.

I might downshift into 1st when the car is crawling at 3-4 mph, but no faster than that.

Re: Doomsday for manual transmission vehicles

Yea, I've heard Honda makes some good manuals. Its too bad they don't really make performance cars anymore. I guess there's the Civic SI but I need something more. Agreed; the Si is a great commuter but it's not a performance car. You might prefer a WRX, Mazdaspeed 3, or Focus/Fiesta ST . But it lo...

Re: Why doesn’t Subaru offer an automatic in the 2015 WRX ST

That's weird because you would expect WRX and STI consumers to have similar preferences as far as transmission is concerned, yet the new WRX has gone from being manual-only to offering both transmission types.
