Re: Should I be using first or second in this situation?

If I'm in a garage I usually just let my car pull along at idle in first (about 5 mph - gotta watch out for pedestrians since they won't watch out for you), but what do I know since I've only been doing this since March. I has a lot to learn. I've had people tell me it takes 10s of thousan...

Re: Take Off Without Killing Car

I think I get confused when people say, "do everything you would on a flat, but faster". I take it to the extreme and end up dropping the clutch (well releasing faster than absolutely necessary) and stall. On the one minor hill (my tassle from graduation points to my handbrake - for the on...

Re: Gash in paint

When I had a rock chip about an inch long down to the metal on the hood of my car, I just bought touch up paint and clear coat from dealer and filled the gash and called it a day. 2 coats of paint and 1 coat of clear coat. and wait a long time between coats, maybe 1-2 hours. I was impatient and did...

Re: Take Off Without Killing Car

To paraphrase again, I'm worrying too much about stuff that probably won't happen - even if the mind says otherwise. I'll follow the directions from THHGTG and "[won't] panic." Overthinking again. Sorry. Hahahaha....don't worry, I used to do the same thing. I remember when I got my...

Re: Take Off Without Killing Car

That's impossible to know for sure because it depends on the driver much more than any other variable. A driver can make any vehicle roll back any distance he/she wants. But in reality, vehicles don't roll back very far at all even on the steepest of hills. Even a short roll back may seem like a lo...

Re: Take Off Without Killing Car

Regarsing rolling back, how far would you say a car really would roll given average reaction times on steeper hills? That's impossible to know for sure because it depends on the driver much more than any other variable. A driver can make any vehicle roll back any distance he/she wants. But in reali...

Re: Take Off Without Killing Car

He is an annoying New Yorker, NOT an annoying New Englander. I'd avoid making that mistake again. I knew he was from that general region, but never really knew the differences between one and the other. Don't kill me! I've only ever seen one epi because I couldn't handle the forced...

Re: Take Off Without Killing Car

Thanks for all the replies with regards to the handbrake. I know it gets discussed here farely frequently. Regarsing rolling back, how far would you say a car really would roll given average reaction times on steeper hills? Any physics people here who can take a guess? Since it will largely depend o...

Re: Take Off Without Killing Car

You can always use the handbrake... This isn't considered cheating for noobs? The part that worries me most is if I ever get into a car without the handbrake I don't want to rely on it too much. :) Hand brake isn't cheating. It is considered proper hill start protocol in much of Europe. I did not r...

Noobs probably need to rely on the handbrake more often anyway...

Re: Take Off Without Killing Car

^ That is the reason why it is such a big no-no to hold your car on a hill with the clutch and throttle. You do that with any frequency and your clutch would be fried in no time. Really steep hills still scare the crap out of me. The other day I was a passenger in my mom's car and we were exiting a...

Re: Gash in paint

I'd buy a small bottle of touch-up paint and do a nice job filling it in. If it still looked like crap and it bothered me, then I'd have a body shop fix it. And in the meantime, at least my amateur touch-up job would protect the panel from forming rust. Would this involve sanding? Is there such a t...

Re: Checking for clutch/synchro wear on a used car?

I wouldn't pay anyone to check, simply because it's something you can check yourself. A mechanic isn't going to separate the engine from the transmission to check the clutch or synchros. Generally, an easy way to check for clutch slippage is to apply wide open throttle in a high gear. If the clutch...

Gash in paint

Hello all of you happy people! I have a quick question for you guys. The other day I was driving home and a rock about 2.5 in. in diameter bounced off my roof. :( At first I thought it was going to take out my windshield because it was kicked up by a semi and was flying towards my face a pretty dece...
