Re: What do you think our chances are of getting a Type R?
New Ford Focus Predicts Spin-Outs With the new Ford-Continental system, it could become even bigger. Up to now, stability control systems have taken between 80-500 milliseconds (msec) to react. But by doing the job preemptively, Ford says its cars will be able to react to the potential spin about 1...

Re: What do you think our chances are of getting a Type R?
Anyone else super excited about the Focus RS coming to the US? New torque vectoring AWD system plus its manual only, so the transmission won't be an afterthought! Just as long as they don't refer to it as the "Arse" Doesn't matter. I would still get it and ride that "Arse". lol

Re: Question on hill starts with hill assist.
I have hill assist too, its both good and bad for a newbie. Its good that it gives you some peace of mind and provides a safety net but its bad because it can make launching more complicated. As soon as you apply gas, the hill hold should disable. So, if you find yourself not moving while you're giv...

Re: rev-matching question
As long as you have the clutch pedal down, you can blip before, during or after moving the shifter. It doesn't matter but blipping during is obviously the fastest.

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?
If you feel synchro resistance when shifting normally, it might also be that you are shifting too fast for the synchro. By too fast, I mean physically moving the shifter too fast. Some cars don't like that.
Feeling some resistance when trying to put it in 1st or reverse is normal.

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?
I think everyone has already addressed all your questions wonderfully, especially moofasa. As a new manual driver, I would say the first thing it sounds like you should do is learn the theory behind the manual transmission. This way you know what to do and what not to do, this will also help your ge...

Re: Shifting from first to second
I don't know how short the gearing is in your car but don't rush to shift into 2nd. If you are going straight then yes it makes sense to get out of 1st as early as possible but lets say you are making a right turn from a stop. In that case, you might want to stay in 1st a little bit longer until you...

Re: How to transition car back into gear from slow rolling?
Unless you're going really really slow like under 5 mph, I would put it in 2nd. Then like the others have said, you have to ease off the clutch like you were launching the car from a standstill. If you are going a little bit faster and you find that you get a jerk when you engage the clutch, it simp...

Re: Best learner MT
Feels like it's not hooked up to anything. Completely numb. Resistance is like the spring from a retractable pen, like a stiff breeze could press it to the floor. Engagement/friction isn't a zone, it's a point; it's an on-off switch, but it's located somewhere near the top of the range (but not all...

Re: Frustrated with shifting
I drive an mk6 Golf too although mine is an R. 1-2 shift still jerks a little if I'm not careful, I think its a combination of the big gear ratio change and also a little bit of rev hang. You can wait for the revs to drop then engage the clutch but that's too slow for my liking. Instead what I find ...

Re: Cold weather clunk debate...lets figure this out!
Even with a brand new Audi, I still got a bit of a notchy shift from 1-2 when the temps got really cold. So I swapped out the original gear oil for some Redline stuff and it was a big improvement for sure. It's still not perfect though, but I can't really complain because it's not very bad at all a...

If only the interior and exterior design were a little more upscale. Especially the headlights and taillights, they don't look like they belong on a $50k car.
