Re: How many time have you shifted from 5 to 2?

Luckily I was driving in the mountains (why the hell was I in fifth anyway) and was already braking. I wanted to shift into fourth but got into second. It wasn't too fast (probably 30mph) so I got up to maybe 3500rpm. Not a big deal.  :| :o So for those who live in a left-hand-drive co...

How many time have you shifted from 5 to 2?

I did it for the first time today. I kind of knew that this would happen after I had become more or less comfortable with rev matching downshifts. Luckily I was driving in the mountains (why the hell was I in fifth anyway) and was already braking. I wanted to shift into fourth but got into second. I...

Re: So what is the best manual you've ever driven?

That's cool. I hate rev-hang. It's like my flywheel is made of lead, it's like it weights 1000 lbs. My revs hang out like college kids on spring break. :? You can get a light weight fly wheel for your Acura. Here's a ramdom example from Google search http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/aasco-billet-...

Re: So what is the best manual you've ever driven?

BTW, even if you are driving slowly or casually, you can still shift quickly to match the speed in which the revs fall in your particular car. That's right. I think if your car has a light-weight fly wheel, the RPM drops more quickly, which is ideal if you are racing and upshifting at the red-line....

Re: So what is the best manual you've ever driven?

I have not driven a lot of manual cars, but I really like the 6spd on my 2008 Cayman S. According to my friend, who is a real car junkie, my gear box is the best he has even driven. Best is not the same as easy to drive. The RPM drops very quickly and it's not particularly enjoyable while driving at...

First gear?

Is this whole thing about putting the car in first gear to prevent sliding backwards just a myth? For both of my cars (2010 GTI and 2008 Cayman), if I don't pull up hand brake, whether I put in first gear, or leave in neutral, the car WILL slide.

Blocking parked car from slipping backwards

My garage has a slight incline, and I am afraid that if I store my car for a long time during vacation, the parking brake may fail and the car would ram into the garage door. Call me crazy, but I am thinking of buying a pair of triangular wooden blocks (what are they called??) to place behind the re...

Preventing dangerous down shifts?

I heard that new cars would prevent you from shifting into rear if the car is moving forward. Is this true?

What about down shifting into a gear that's too low for the current speed. I almost down shifted from 5th to 2nd once while trying to exit the free way .....

Re: Drove a 911 Turbo today

However, I'm still jealous as f**k that you got to drive a 911 Turbo... As far as I heard, it's very easy to go to a Porsche dealership and test drive any used cars there. The car salesmen usually don't care if a few miles are put on the used cars. It's better to call first and schedule an appointm...

Drove a 911 Turbo today

After I had 1 month training on my manual 98 Civic with the bad throttle, my friend deemed me fit enough to drive his 04 911 Turbo. All I can say is ---- WOW! The acceleration is just amazing. We were on a quiet local street and I got it to over 70mph in second gear, and the turbo boost just started...

Re: Too much gas at start-up

BTW, as many of you suggested, I need to also practice more no-gas launch to get better at the clutch. I found a nice empty bay side parking lot, so I intend to go there every night to enjoy the breeze :-) I will try to go through all the gears, and see how high my 12 year old civic could go ... I h...

Re: Too much gas at start-up

Some more progress report. I hope it doesn't bore everyone. My throttle is still sticky, but I practice just the throttle for more than 30 minutes today and seem to be getting better at it. The throttle response is like this [dead zone][resistance zone][linear response --------> The dead zone is whe...

Re: Too much gas at start-up

Good to hear :) . You'll know if you took out too much cable slack. If the car is idling high, you know you overtightened it. It still idles at about 600~700, so I think I can tighten it even more to get rid of the last bit of dead zone. BTW, my Civic can go really low without stalling. The RPM can...

Re: Too much gas at start-up

I'd at least check the deflection of the cable to see if it is actually out of spec. I think it's 1/2 an inch at the most. Mine was a little over that. But gizmo makes a point. Get you process down. I drove for a year with my car out of spec just fine. But if you have any experience under the hood,...
