Re: Best way to launch a Toyota Matrix 09 XR

I remember the launching advise here was to gradually release the clutch and compensate for the rpm drop by simultaneously adding gas, what ever wording. pausing? I started analysing my foot work and consequent response of car, hoping to find what it was I was doing and if I pawsed. The only pawses ...

Re: Best way to launch a Toyota Matrix 09 XR

I swear by the pause, right as the clutch grabs enough for the vehicle to start rolling. As the relative speed between the flysheel and the clutch starts to drop, the clutch seems to clamp tighter all by itself, like mebbe it's a static friction vs dynamic friction thang. If you rush through that p...

Re: rev-matching question

A few hundred is fine. Closer is better. Plenty of people never learn about rev-matching and drive their whole lives without replacing a clutch. This This This!! :) Got to be said and repeated: Whatever you mess-up in the process of learning, regardless of how terrible it feels or it is on paper, i...

Re: Burning the clutch when upshifting

Than why do so many people care about rev-matching, is it only for smoothness ? there are some funky misquotes in here, LoL  depends really why you are downshifting. If it is because you are coming to a stop, then just use the brakes, no need to downshift. If it is to pick-up power, rev match ...

Re: jerk free shifts

I used only the clutch today(no gas) to shift from first to second and it was still too "jerky". I shifted around 3k rpms. Any suggestions? could you tell us exactly at what point(s) during your shifts does the jerk(s) occur? (picture, Rope) what you've described so far about your shiftin...

Re: jerk free shifts

When I do clutch, I am always fully off the gas before I push the clutch in, but the revs still hang fairly high. :(  :o guess that means you have to delay your clutch release  :? 8) 'clutch release' It could mean disengage the clutch or release the clutch pedal, to people...

Re: engine braking question

been a while since I lurked in here, yeah, there are 2 types of blippers, 1) and 3). 2) is only described for academic purposes :D I 1) when slowing down and get ready to get going, I sort of 3) when downshifting to flash accelerate, but that's not bleeping anymore, as foot remains on the gas pedal....

Re: Slow to a stop, but then immediately keep going

2) rev match for 1st (give it some gas) before release of clutch pedal (Watkin's recommendation, but he didn't say it) Yeah, that. I owe it to you to have complemented this piece in my 30+ years experience with manual. DC rev match into 1st or direct rev match into 1st is great for situations which...

Re: engine braking question

Now the question is if you apply just the slightest amount of gas (and hold it) and do the same thing with the clutch (be really careful letting it out) do you get the same braking effect, or will it be really smooth ? I believe the OP was asking if there would be engine braking effect if you'd app...

Re: Slow to a stop, but then immediately keep going

problem OP is encountering is what Tankinbeans and SonikHKS suspect, shifting to first while still rolling. the rolling speed is still too high for 1st idle, so engine breaking in 1st slows the car dramatically, as if being pulled back by an elephant. few approaches (as others said): 1) rolling laun...

Re: Anxious to rev-match because fear of letting off the bra

RE: Heal Toe as discussed previously with cow: in modern cars, the brakes are so sensitive (hydraulic assisted braking) that unless you are breaking hard from a considerable velocity, it will be difficult to apply steady pressure on the brake pedal and operate the go pedal at the same time. On my Pe...

Re: How to adjust to a new car?

I found the biggest problem in adjusting to new cars to be having driven the same car for too long, and on regular routes, the same driving style (aggressiveness) . Doing so gets you used to driving by timing, clutch grab position and throttle position (muscle memory) for wanted acceleration. I was ...

Re: Stalling in 2nd gear at low speed

slowing down in 2nd, picking-up speed again in 2nd after slowing to a crawl, or down shifting to 1st before picking-up speed is something even most experienced stick-shifters would struggle with, specially if the manoeuvres / decisions have to be made fast. If you want to become improve in that part...

Re: Stalling in 2nd gear at low speed

rev matching to 1st is always going to be a bumpy ride when you release the clutch, whether by double clutch or single clutch. What I do is the double clutch rev match, but when in 1st I don't release the clutch as in DC down shifts to higher gears (eg: 5 to 2, 4 to 2, 5 to 3), instead, I do a see-s...

Re: Stalling in 2nd gear at low speed

I would:
1) Rolling no gas launch in 2nd, then add gas. Should be fast since you are already rolling at 3-4mph
2) Rolling gas launch in 2nd, as others have said

both options depending on the situation
