Re: Over rev when launching?

It is torque differential that wears a clutch. Using a longer slip to absorb the same amount of torque differential is therefore better for the clutch than using a shorter slip and absorbing it more quickly. Lowering the torque differential to be absorbed, by reducing launch revs, is, of course, ev...

The trouble is that "permanent" magnets demagnetize over time, and that they're not as powerful as electromagnets are.

Re: Another Day, Another Idiot Driver (Misc Thread for Stories)

^ Had a similar thing happen once. I was driving my truck with the steel winch bumper on the front. It's a massive 95lb 1/8" steel bumper, 1/4" steel around the mounts and the winch cradle, made and tested to handle over 40,000 lbs of pulling force and not get damaged. There are two brack...

Slowing down *before* turning into turn lanes

WTF is with these morons who slow down to a crawl before turning into empty left turn lanes? In rush hour these f**k manage to create huge backups in the "fast" lanes.

Re: Suicidal tendencies, ie. Story of buying the Firebird

Paolo300zx, if you have a chemical imbalance in your brain, then you need medication, and buying yourself a car or flying an airplane aint gonna help. But there could a brattish/assholish component to ones behavior that is independent of depression and in fact depression is used as excuse for that. ...

Psychiatrist time. You may be depressed, or have bipolar disorder.

Or else you're just a brat, and your dad needs to give you a good spanking.

If you park on a slope, always put a pair of bricks behind (or in front of) the wheels!

Re: Is the reverse whine characteristic of manual transmissions?

http://ppgearbox.com.au/images/content/WRXDOG.jpg Very interesting. So all 6 gear pairs are always engaged, and are all on the same shaft. I suspect there is a mechanism to allow just one of the gear pairs to drive the transmission. I've always thought that it the gear box worked by selecting one o...

Re: Is the reverse whine characteristic of manual transmissions?

Funny, gearboxes on heavy duty Mack trucks use straight cut gears

All the T300 gearing uses a spur type design for maximum efficiency
and minimum friction

Re: Is the reverse whine characteristic of manual transmissions?

Now, this brings up a question I've had for years. Straight cut years whine, yes. Fact of life. But why? Specifically, what about a straight cut gear makes it whine? I suspect the whine is caused by the nongradual engagement of the teeth of the straight cut two gears. That causes a small shock --->...

How does that work? How quick the shift is depends only on how quickly you release the clutch pedal.

A 2.3 liter engine + manual transmission is decently fast. Plus Mazda3 has very good handling
