Re: *New Language, Context, & Attitude (Now in Effect)*
The biggest drawback of groups in my mind is the searching and categorization functions are far less user friendly or reliable. Searching facebook is indeed nearly worthless. IMO, however, the biggest drawback is having everybody all on a single site, owned by a single company...and a Big Brothery ...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi
You know, I wouldn't be thrilled with clutch-by-wire or shift-by-wire (for one thing, I've always appreciated a fully independent mechanical backup in the event the computer goes full HAL-9000, plus they probably wouldn't get the feel right), but I'm still a little disappointed that the shift to ev...

Re: Honest Engines
Crap. Page win, and it's my own posts that end the previous page. Back in the day we would have a friend hook a rope or chain to his bumper and tow the disabled car (assuming it was not a blown ball joint with the wheel at some skewed angle. That was risky and I think now a ticket-able offence. I've...

Re: Honest Engines
↑The links in my previous post make it look like spam. Anyway... I think the trick is how to fix the car in a reasonable amount of hours so you can get it out of there and stop paying rent....and how do you get it over there if it's not running and how do you get it out of there is it's still ...

Re: Honest Engines
At some point in time, paying for a tow went from paying the tow operators wage to (CHA-CHING!) paying for the monthly payment on his power boat. I'm not quite so sure about that. There are certainly some who are raking it in, especially crooked ones running rackets in cahoots with politicians . I'...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi
Wasn't there an old Aesop's Fable about a collision warning system that cried "Pedestrian" too often as a prank and then later, when there really was a pedestrian walking out from between two cars parked along the curb,..... Boy Who Cried Wolf is an incredibly important and severely under...

Re: Vehicles that you wouldn't think could have a standard shift
(had to think about trading in after driving it in snow for the first time) had a 5 speed manual. It was a nice powertrain but the van was very spartan. I imagine the rear end was not very heavy, though better than a pickup. For snow you would want good snow tires and some ballast. And yeah, the As...

Re: Vehicles that you wouldn't think could have a standard shift
Another van that came with a standard shift was the Chevy Astro if it had the base 4 cylinder engine. The 4.3V6 was by far in the majority of them, of course only with an automatic. The Astro 4.3 was available with three pedals 1985-1989. It had possibly the strongest NWC T5 and the only 11 inch cl...

Re: How have you brought home a recently purchased used car?
Funny enough, I knew someone who got pulled over by one of them OCR reading plate readers for having expired registration. Somehow the notice got lost in the mail and when you have multiple vehicles, it's tough to keep tabs. Plus, I guess they switched their computer system and got a whole bunch of...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi
A modern vehicle is made of a zillion expensive, complex parts that are engineered for super-precise manufacturing which is done by imperfect humans or by robots that are built/programmed/maintained by imperfecthumans...and all on a super-competitive budget. Is it realistic to expect a new vehicle b...

Re: Seams Tummy Eye Dew Recall.....
On top of that, its far more reliable than a cable parking brake since it is self-adjusting and applies far more pressure. Well ok, I've finally seen a GOOD argument in favor of the electric parking brake. I still prefer the old fashioned one, but now I can at least appreciate something about the n...

Re: Seams Tummy Eye Dew Recall.....
You are right, that knob is too close to the other stuff. A person might spin it into park trying to turn the radio down. Yeah, better stick with a small lever on the column. Better yet, ban automatic transmissions! People DO spin it when trying to adjust the radio or heat. It's a damned mess. My s...

Re: Seams Tummy Eye Dew Recall.....
When it comes to automatic transmisisons, the least obtrusive selector the better. Since the selector does not actively function to drive the car, why have a big nasty lever sticking up between the seats (unless one wants to think they are cool, when at best they are a poser). No, Chrysler had it r...

Re: The beast has come...
Perhaps in a year or two we will want more giddy-up and can have someone stuff that 3.73 into the pumpkin. There is a shop near me says they can do it for around $250. Grab a matching, complete axle (drum to drum) at the junkyard and stuff the gears into that one. Then swapping is a relatively simp...

Re: How have you brought home a recently purchased used car?
I think CT is approximately the same as RI: Insure it (online with major companies you can do it immediately, or just ride dirty I guess; or maybe your policy automatically covers a car you just bought but haven't registered yet, read the fine print), slap the plates from your car on it, carry the t...
