Shifter movement

Hi everyone.... I haven't been on the board for a long time, I've been really swamped lately. So I'm looking at buying a used Toyota Rav4 (1997, 200,000km, 4WD, manual trans). When I took it for a test drive, I noticed that in 5th gear, the shifter would move up and down about 1/2" each way as ...

Your Debut Album

I was stumbling around the internet, came across this, and it looked pretty fun. Your Debut Album 1 - Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band. 2 - Go to Random quotations: http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 The last...

Re: Fastest way to brake?

I think it depends on the situation.....In an emergency stop, engine braking is insignificant.... however, if you are in an emergency situation that requires you to swerve, accelerate out of the way, or otherwise maneuver, it would be better to be in gear. As for shifting the weight forward using en...

Re: I'm Still Confused

Double-clutching will not directly improve jerkiness. Jerkiness will only be alleviated by getting your final rev-match right as the clutch hooks up with the car in the new gear. It's true one of the big reasons for double-clutching is to reduce synchro wear, but the benefit you will see in the dri...

Re: Giving the car a bit of gas when starting

On my first car, the part that controls the idle speed quit working. So I had to give it a bit of gas to get it started until I got around to fixing it. If it won't start without giving it gas, something isn't right.

Re: I'm Still Confused

If you're just learning, don't bother trying to double clutch. I've been driving stick now for a few months and I still haven't tried to do a double clutch downshift.

That said, try to learn to rev match your downshifts. It feels great the first time you get it right!

Re: wine....

yes, it was a bit strong. i'd ask my momma, but she might freak... Hmmm... I'm trying to figure out which wine it was that I had last. It was really good, and pretty light. It didn't have that really strong bite that a lot of wines have.... It was either a Baco Noir, or a Cabernet Franc.... I think...

Re: When in 2nd gear, the car bounces at low rpm. Normal?

In 1st and 2nd, you have to be very gentle with the accelerator pedal. Smooth on and smooth off, or it will be jerky. I also find that the throttle response can be a bit unpredictable when the RPMs are very low (nearly stalling). For example, on my car, if the RPM get really low, and I give it more ...

Re: wine....

I think most red wines have a strong bite straight out of the bottle. If possible, it's best to open the bottle a couple hours before you drink it, to let it "breath". I went on a winery tour a couple months back, and if I remember, the tour guide said the tannic acids in the wine become a...

In my Corolla, I usually stay in 4th at 50kph, I'll use 5th if I get above 60.

Re: New house - in the company of rich pricks

Recently, Ontario passed a law (or maybe are about to pass it) stating that HOA's are not allowed to ban people from having clotheslines. The Ontario government is really trying to promote energy conservation, and banning clotheslines seems a bit counterproductive.... however, it's probably not goin...

Re: Is AWD/4WD necessary for snow, rain, or low traction roads?

I've always used all seasons only, and I've never had much of a problem. That said, I'm going to try to get a set of snow tires next winter.

What are the advantages of summer tires for the summer vs. all seasons?
