Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

I'd expect there's some compromise in the TRD suspension that makes it less suitable as a stable towing/hauling platform. I could see softer shocks and roll bars being selected depending on what usage they're trying to optimize for.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

Without AWD, you should only need to worry about diameter differences on the drive axle and that's only a significant concern if you have a limited slip differential.

If you're worried about it, get the new one shaved.

Re: So I got two new tires for the Mazda 5 today

The optimum strategy depends somewhat on who will be driving the vehicle. You're less likely to get stuck and will tend to even out the tire wear over time if you put the good tires on the front, but there are a lot of people who drive FWD vehicles for their presumably more benign handling character...

Re: If One Clutch is Good,.....

There's no reason a DSG couldn't be made to launch smoothly. Full manuals can, of course. There just has to be the want-to.

Re: How much do you drive manual for the performance reasons vs. the experience?

Funny you mention the GM 8-speed as good. There's actually a class action on it now. There are a couple of human-factors reasons most manuals don't do as well on the highway. One is that adding gears to a CVT or automatic is pretty straightforward (though technically difficult with the packaging, we...

Re: How much do you drive manual for the performance reasons vs. the experience?

In large measure, the price, efficiency, and performance penalties have been reduced, eliminated, or even reversed with the multispeed automatics, SMGs, and CVTs. With a proliferation of flappy paddles and +/- buttons, you can have almost full control over gear selection in most models/trim levels. ...

Re: Well I found the Focus replacement...

can you please explain this to me? you are implying you are potentially gaining money, when it sounds like knot? i don';t get it. the one time i totalled a car, i didn't bother buying it back. Sounds like it was well-bought in order for the difference between total loss payment and salvage value to...

Pretty sure we had a bot talking to itself in the first two posts here, so that's gone and both identities are banned. Carry on, keep it PG.

I've seen them available, but you probably have to request them if you want to be environmentally friendly. Wonder what the carbon footprint of those four 5500-class trucks was...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

You know, I wouldn't be thrilled with clutch-by-wire or shift-by-wire (for one thing, I've always appreciated a fully independent mechanical backup in the event the computer goes full HAL-9000, plus they probably wouldn't get the feel right), but I'm still a little disappointed that the shift to eve...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

i always liked the brz/frs/86 design, but would've preferred it more as a comfy roadster (if that's the right word, not a convertible, more like a porsche cayman) That is not the right word but it is an ironic choice of example. The Cayman is the coupe version of the Boxster. The second half of Box...

Re: Just a couple of cars I saw lately

I don't think the corporate wisdom has decayed quite to the point where a dead battery means you have to put a forklift through the windows, heave the thing on a flatbed, and haul it off to the junkyard. Most of the fob-only vehicles I'm aware of have a hidden key in the fob and a pop-off panel on t...

Probably one of the areas where E0 is only available in high-test. We have some stations like that here but there are others that carry E0 in all grades.
