Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

In addition to the component compromises in capacity and CG, electrical connections are designed to a specific number of connect/disconnect cycles and that number is usually small for high-current applications.

Re: Well I found the Focus replacement...

My truck had similar tint all the way around when I bought it. I found it significantly increased the degree of difficulty of driving at night and destroyed the usefulness of the right outside mirror when the sun was low in the sky and behind me. It was also one more thing the gendarmes could give m...

Re: Manuals you'll miss in 2019...

It took me over 15 years to get my first 4WD and I'm only now getting my first FWD (by marriage). I do prefer the RWD handling dynamics. There are FWD cars that handle quite nicely in most respects but torque steer is real and I also prefer the RWD handling in winter conditions. This truck is also t...

I could believe that one will turn into SEO spam after we've all forgotten about it.

Re: Just a couple of cars I saw lately

Either put something that breaks up the flat section or eliminate it entirely. That treatment is awkward.

Re: ClutchDisc's new ride

I do find the fully manual gear selection to reduce a lot of my frustrations with automatics. The ability to dial up engine braking or pre-shift before needing power the way I would in a manual makes a lot of difference. Definitely not the same and not as enjoyable, but also far less painful. The st...

Re: The beast has come...

It's not necessarily just about quarter mile times. I went from 3.27s to 3.55s in my Grand Marquis (yeah, more weight and less power, but still...) and it feels significantly more effortless going from stop light to stop light, to the point that my city mileage went up by about 25% (I did lose some ...

Re: Finally got another car

"Just slowing down for those," isn't always easy or safe. To avoid scraping my wife's Focus over the speed bumps in her addition, you have to slow to about 5. It will even scrape in a few places going over expansion joints in interstate highways. Where one road that gets plowed intersects with anoth...

Re: Finally got another car

I think it was the Volvo noted as sold in his signature. Yeah, there is the occasional trip on which I'd like to take the 'Vette but think of a place on the route that could be a problem for the clearances and choose to take something else. As cars keep getting lower in pursuit of the vaunted MPGs, ...

Re: Does this unicorn exist?

Different seats and power seat configurations will often have different amounts of travel, especially in the vertical direction. Might be worth a shot if you liked it otherwise.

Re: Dodge Dart Manuel Woes

Depended on the trim level. The rental agency gave me a 200 to drive around the Pacific Northwest. The rotary shift dial was so irritating that I looked it up and there were higher trim levels with flappy paddles.

Re: Post your speed in top gear at 3000 RPM

Absolutely not a myth. There's more to the analysis than, "How much MPG can I accomplish?" The more-complex drivetrain and batteries have costs in up-front manufacturing costs and environmental impacts and at least the potential for higher ongoing maintenance requirements. You have to get enough bet...

Re: Post your speed in top gear at 3000 RPM

If it's predominantly highway mileage, which at that number it probably is, a Prius would actually not be a great choice. Hybrid systems shine in town, but on the highway they're generally just dead weight.

Re: Does this unicorn exist?

The manual would be the tricky part with the Benzes, short of importing a second equivalent car from Europe and swapping the drivetrains.
