Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

Seems like there wouldn't be much difference between hail large enough to damage cars and hail large enough to damage PV cells...Plus there's not a lot of overhang there, so if the hail is wind-driven, about half the inventory is still going to get it.

Re: Honest Engines

The older the Durango gets, the more spry it becomes. https://s3-prod.autonews.com/s3fs-public/styles/width_792/public/4DURANGO-MAIN_i.jpg "Dodge likes to think of the Durango as a three-row Charger, and the brand has given the aging SUV a new lease on life in recent years by touting its performanc...

Re: I'm starting to get depressed about the automotive future

Yeah, it's over now. I didn't want to sock 50 grand at it...Mine's an '08. In horse and livestock circles, I've seen a disproportionate number of Rams, with a disproportionate number of those being Cummins/six-speed units. Maybe most of the sales are going to hotshot services who are having a tough ...

Re: I'm starting to get depressed about the automotive future

I never saw myself having a Mopar or an HD diesel but availability of manuals has pushed me there. Not a fan of the extra maintenance or complexity or the gross overkill for 99% of my driving, but it is what it is until something else catches my eye. Holding my breath the Bronco looks good, is reaso...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

I'd expect there's some compromise in the TRD suspension that makes it less suitable as a stable towing/hauling platform. I could see softer shocks and roll bars being selected depending on what usage they're trying to optimize for.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

Without AWD, you should only need to worry about diameter differences on the drive axle and that's only a significant concern if you have a limited slip differential.

If you're worried about it, get the new one shaved.

Re: So I got two new tires for the Mazda 5 today

The optimum strategy depends somewhat on who will be driving the vehicle. You're less likely to get stuck and will tend to even out the tire wear over time if you put the good tires on the front, but there are a lot of people who drive FWD vehicles for their presumably more benign handling character...

Re: If One Clutch is Good,.....

There's no reason a DSG couldn't be made to launch smoothly. Full manuals can, of course. There just has to be the want-to.

Re: How much do you drive manual for the performance reasons vs. the experience?

Funny you mention the GM 8-speed as good. There's actually a class action on it now. There are a couple of human-factors reasons most manuals don't do as well on the highway. One is that adding gears to a CVT or automatic is pretty straightforward (though technically difficult with the packaging, we...

Re: How much do you drive manual for the performance reasons vs. the experience?

In large measure, the price, efficiency, and performance penalties have been reduced, eliminated, or even reversed with the multispeed automatics, SMGs, and CVTs. With a proliferation of flappy paddles and +/- buttons, you can have almost full control over gear selection in most models/trim levels. ...

Re: Well I found the Focus replacement...

can you please explain this to me? you are implying you are potentially gaining money, when it sounds like knot? i don';t get it. the one time i totalled a car, i didn't bother buying it back. Sounds like it was well-bought in order for the difference between total loss payment and salvage value to...

Pretty sure we had a bot talking to itself in the first two posts here, so that's gone and both identities are banned. Carry on, keep it PG.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

You know, I wouldn't be thrilled with clutch-by-wire or shift-by-wire (for one thing, I've always appreciated a fully independent mechanical backup in the event the computer goes full HAL-9000, plus they probably wouldn't get the feel right), but I'm still a little disappointed that the shift to eve...
