Re: NY Tire Disposal Fee vs. New Tire Recycling fee
Interesting, well guess I'll have to see what the tire shop says. Thanks for the input!

NY Tire Disposal Fee vs. New Tire Recycling fee
I just purchased tires individually and am planning to have them installed at a tire store. My understanding is that NY imposes a $2.50 fee for all NEW tires sold, to cover recycling and waste tire fees. I'm not sure, but I assume this is factored in to the price that I paid when I bought my tires o...

Re: Small tire crack, replacement with Honda or Firestone?
Can you find the full 10-to-12 digit DOT code? Its last 4 digits will be the week and year in which the tire was manufactured. That might turn up Honda putting old tires on the car or a dealership doing some swapping. What pressure is in the tire now? Radial cracks (ones running in that direction) ...

Re: Small tire crack, replacement with Honda or Firestone?
I think I'll do that and save a trip to the Honda dealership for now. I also feel like there won't be any real issues with the tire, but considering the tire is still extremely new, I wonder what 3 years of weathering and 12 seasons may do to exacerbate the issue.

Re: Small tire crack, replacement with Honda or Firestone?
The jaggedness nature of the crack makes me think it's not a slash type damage. A cut should be more linear, but I could be wrong. It's not deep (I can't really give an estimate), and the tire isn't losing pressure.

Small tire crack, replacement with Honda or Firestone?
My parents recently took delivery of a new Honda Civic. The car has been driven about 1500 miles, 2 months. I was detailing the car today and noticed a hairline crack on one of the tires, and maybe you guys can help with diagnosis, but it doesn't look like any impact/curb damage. Two questions: 1) I...

Re: 5th Annual Standardshift Meet Discussion and Planning
This is self-motivated, but Boston would be a good place to meet, although I'm not as familiar with available camping locations. If we do driving it will of course have to be a little farther on the outskirts of the city, but I'd be absolutely down.

Re: Driving on the "wrong" side of the road
Can't answer your question for sure, but I can say that when I went to London for a short vacation, being a pedestrian was quite challenging because I'd always be looking the wrong way. In addition I was trying to figure out whether drivers pass on left or pass on right, but didn't have enough time ...

Re: Does a manual car feel different (clutch/shifter)as it a
Where do you live where there is a true manual transmission vehicle in a car sharing program?? Our two programs up here, Zipcar and Modo, only have automatics in their fleet. I wanted to start my own car sharing company for enthusiasts. The site is called relayrides.com. It doesn't cater to manual ...

Re: Shifting into reverse...grinds sometimes, why?
I think I've found a pattern that would explain my problem.. I noticed that it's tends to be difficult to get into reverse when I'm in a rush, which translates to when I'm doing a quick U-turn on the road, which translates usually to acceleration in first gear, quickly clutching in, stopping, and mo...

Re: Favorite shift sequence
I like my DCHT 5-4 downshift, it's the easiest to make smooth because of the gearing ratios.

Re: Shifting into reverse...grinds sometimes, why?
Just shift into a forward gear before shifting into reverse. Works every time. Interesting. This is what I have been trying, but strangely it doesn't work 100% of the time. There are times when I can only half-engage my reverse gear, resulting in a clanging noise when I let out the clutch. I'll try...

Re: Does a manual car feel different (clutch/shifter)as it a
Fair enough. Yea I think I understand the difference between a heavy and light clutch--I was in a Mazda showroom and sat in the Mazdaspeed3, and that clutch required some serious effort. But what was strange about the Civic clutch was that it doesn't have the "decreased" springiness in the...

Does a manual car feel different (clutch/shifter)as it ages?
I'm currently driving a 2010 Mazda3, and it feels great. However, because it's the my first manual, I don't have much to compare to. The only other car I've tested driven is a 2004 Mazda3 (~70K miles), which felt more or less similar, except the shifter felt a little less direct. It was within expec...
