Re: Do you remember the first time you drove stick?

I'll tell you what, I remember the first time I drove a slushbox, it was when I came to the US to visit some folks. I didn't know anyone who had an auto at the time

Re: Where does your car redline?

My Mondeo redlines at 6500, just after peak power. No rev limiter, a friends Focus had exactly the same engine (1.8 Zetec) but that did have a limiter :? My SAAB redlined at 6000 but the ECU managed to keep the turbo on the boil pretty much throughout the rev range. It seemed to me, that it wasn't l...

Re: Driving Skills Quiz

85, not bad for an unprepared tourist I guess 8)

In the UK the first stage for learners is called the Theory Test, which is similar, and you have to pass before you get to the driving.

Re: MSN 9/04/08: "Stickshifts long lost Art"

the Focuses, Aveos, HHRs, etc of this world really just make you start questioning the worthiness of life. The Ford Focus? Are we talking about the same car here? http://www.carprices.co.uk/images/fordfocus.jpg Cos in the UK, the Focus is regarded as one of the better drives in its class, even the ...

Once, when I was on a day out offroading, my shoe broke, so I had to drive home in motocross boots.

Re: Who has the highest mileage car?

I once had a Vauxhall Cavalier that was 3 years old when I got it, and it already had 109,000 miles on it. Fantastic for cruising up & down motorways all day, loved by company drivers. I can see the design meeting now: "Now chaps, how are we going to make the car more economical? lean burn?...

Re: Fired up about gas prices?

What we REALLY need is for some clever petrochemist to come up with an economically feasible way to break down plastics. Plastics aren't so far off, chemically speaking, from gasoline and other petroleum products. If we could convert them efficiently, we'd kill two birds with one stone--plastic tra...

Re: Fired up about gas prices?

I paid £53 to fill up my Mondeo today (=about $100) , and that's from one of the cheaper places, a Tesco supermarket in Bristol, regular unleaded @109p /litre. But better this, than filling up back home, where unleaded is about 119p, and diesel is 136p. Small diesel cars (VW Polo, Toyota Aygo) which...

Re: A car you've never heard of - Merkur XR4Ti

Fast Sierras in the UK: XR4i = RWD 2.0 litre 125bhp, and then 2.8 litre V6 150bhp XR4x4= 2.8, then 2.9 V6, 4WD Sierra Cosworth = 204bhp 2 litre turbo, RWD then 4WD. I had a Sierra 2.9i GLS 4x4, mechanically very similar to the XR4x4. Loads of torque + short gearing + 4WD = mucho fun :D It was rough ...
