On this new account: How fast do you let off the clutch? If you slowly let off it, this "slow" decrease in revs makes sense. In newer engines, the engine supposedly continues spinning after you release the gas in order to burn off any excess fuel in the combustion chambers. I used to find ...

I like it grabbing 3/4 of the way down - just enough room to feel the gradient of grabbing power when trying to inch forward or backward.

I just don't find driving an automatic that fun... I've never heard anyone say an auto is more fun than a manual. victim, do you simply feel than automatics are more convenient? This I can understand, although for my personal tastes I disagree :-)

To answer the question: It all depends on how much anticipation I have of the turn. Generally, I would brake and double-clutch 5th gear to 3rd, brake a bit more if necessary, double-clutch to 2nd, and take the turn in 2nd (NOT in neutral). If you have 6 speeds, same thing: double clutch 6th to 3rd, ...

I think Johnf514 is suggesting that he double-clutch his UPshifts from 2nd to 3rd, and from 4th to 5th, not just his downshifts to 3rd. I agree. I have a finicky 2nd gear in my car, and I always double-clutch 1st to 2nd no matter what. Here's how I do a double-clutch upshift, 1st to 2nd: I simply cl...

I do mostly leg-based clutching. Sometimes when I don't need a quick launch and want to baby my clutch, I pivot off the heel. My car's clutch grabs at about halfway up, though, so it's hard to just pivot. Each car is different, thuogh; I recently valeted a Toyota Echo stick. Stalled it twice, becaus...

Perhaps I am at variance with other stick drivers here, but this is what I tend to do: Since I like to rev-match on upshifts as well as downshifts, I like sometimes to wait that extra second for the revs to come down before going fully into 2nd gear from 1st. I also always double-clutch the 1st-2nd ...

If your revs are too low, yes, and also if the hybrid system has something to do with it. I've never driven a hybrid civic before, let alone a stick-hybrid Civic! What's it like?

I'm sure there's money in this kind of school somewhere, though (until the CVT/hybrid firmly bombs the stick into the stone age)

Actually, the R24 135 was a common pattern. Go Google "dog leg pattern". I have to agree with the R246 1357. 1st gear is not something you'll use all the time Well, the dogleg pattern is not common nowadays, as I've never driven it (I am nobody special, but as a valet, I have driven over ...

The damn thing shifts whenever it wants to, and it will accelerate to upshift. More than once, that little jump in speed has almost put me into the back of a car. Ugh! that is the most annoying thing about automatics, that little jerk of an upshift when you have just taken your foot off the gas and...

As for the number of misshifts with a seven-speed... You could make it work just like a six-speed, sprung to 4/5, with a positive lockout mechanism not only for reverse but also for first. R 2 4 6 1 3 5 7 Pull up the collar or push down on the stick to go to first or reverse. When done running firs...

7-speed manuals??

Are there any 7-speed manual cars out there? I believe Ferrari used to make a 7-speed Mondial back in the early 90s.

Mercedes 7G-tronic does not count, of course; it is an automatic. I'm looking for 7-speed clutch-equipped stick-shift cars! Anybody know one (big rigs don't count either)?

Revmatching automatic transmission downshifts ("manumat

Hey guys, When I drive cars at my valet job, I get a lot of the ones with this kind of gear seletion pattern: P R N + D _ When you're in drive, you simply knock the gear selector over into the +/- area and then knock it backward (toward the -) to downshift and forward (toward the +) to allow upshift...
