I googled for a while and saw a few suggestions that it's the forward/backward knob.

I think that's the most logical answer. Or possibly up/down, but whatever.

I think this thread should expand to worst looking interiors as well.

Nope. That should be its own thread.

This thread already has some pretty hideous interiors. A lot of it comes down to personal taste. I find the porshe interior posted earlier to be pretty bad. What's up with the shifter being almost on the dashboard? Also I hate the volvo center console. Looks like it belongs in an art school basement along with coat-hanger statues.

The Porsche panamera has a nice interior. Lots of buttons! :D seats need a shit ton of breaking in though.

Where is that post? I can't find it.

If it's an automatic, that's the latest style...a redonkulously huge T-shifter sticking out of the dashboard...the worst qualities of every possible style. All the pointless obstruction of having a T-shifter sticking out in the middle of the car, plus all the ergonomic failure of having to reach up to airspace in front of the dash to shift as with a column shifter (and worse because it's nowhere near the steering wheel).

+1 to all that^

I love the Carrera GT's interior, although it's possible that part of me just loves it because it's a Carrera GT. That shifter placement is awesome, though.

The Civic Si used to have the same type of thing for a little while:

^ the civic has it in the right place but its ugly as sin.... the carrera works because the shifter is in the big center console. The civics is just there as if it was an afterthought

In a race, I suppose. I usually think of things in terms of the two hundred fifty thousand miles I'm going to put on a vehicle, which are on the road, rather than the two thousand I might put on if I raced it. Then again, I don't buy Carrera GTs...

OH GOD NO! THE HORROR! I'd rather drive a rusted wrecked slushie Dodge Spirit than deal with that shifter.

That Carrera GT shifter makes me think of this:

Looking at it, I imagine that's how I'd feel reaching for it. I know that's not how it really is, but still...

That civic shifter reminds me of the Fiat Multipla, which is so ugly, I can't even find any pictures that I can link successfully. The internet itself scorns that abomination.

I think having the shifter that high up would make for an uncomfortable arm position.

I've driven an EP3 Civic. I too thought it was bad...but then I drove it. It was actually surprisingly comfortable, despite the setup. But only drove it around the block. It really wasn't my test drive. How this would fare in day to day driving is still unknown. But I didn't mind it too much. You aren't stretching. The reach is pretty much the same, but the shifter is in a different location.
