clutchless shifting

Post by R-U-nuts »

Hey I need some tips for clutchless shifting. I can pop the shifter out of gear easily but the only problem is getting it into the next gear. I was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to do this. Is there certain rpm's I should shift at? My rpm's also seem to hang quite a bit.

Honestly, unless you have the means to replace your transmission/synchros quicker than expected, just don't. Once or twice trying it won't hurt it in the long run, but it is just dumb to do this. Your clutch was made for a reason. Use it.

what car are you driving? unless it's an old beater or you know what you're doing, i wouldn't try learning on a good car. i tried it a few times on the civic, and bravely tried it on the maxima (was a newer car at the time and they aren't known for having bulletproof trannies), but i don't think i even bothered trying on the 96 accord which was even older when i had it. from what i've heard and read, it's pretty easy to do it on most broken-in trannies once you get good at it but most of them learned to do it on either a truck with no synchros or an old beater with worn-out synchros... :) .

This. But, with that said, I find it hard to explain how to clutchless shift. I sort of just let the RPMs drop till it feels 'right', then just pop it in. I've never had a grind or anything.

my dad was good at clutchless shifting (used to drive a big rig and had old trucks with no synchros and had driven cars with busted clutches back in the day) and explained it pretty clearly, but he made it look easier than it was to do for me  . i always loved when he'd go from shifting normally to shifting without the clutch all of a sudden, when he had the old F250. now he drives slushy though and i hardly see him anyway (lives in florida) .

If you're driving a car that has rev hang it's probably a recent car...probably not a great idea to do a lot of clutchless shifting. Anyway, rev hang will make your clutchless shifting take MUCH longer. You have to wait for rev hang to end before you can rev-match.

Here's how to clutchless shift, distilled into a few simple (but not easy) steps:

1. Learn to double clutch
2. Become perfect at double clutching
3. Stop using the clutch pedal

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'd rather keep my synchros than learn to clutchless shift. I just thought it would be a cool thing to know how to do.

Hey, wanna learn how to do something else that makes your synchros grow old before their time?

Launch the car from a standstill w/o using the clutch pedal!

On level ground, with the engine running & the the trans in neutral, just start pushing on the shift knob like you were trying to shift it into 1st gear without pushing in the clutch - well, you may have to push fairly hard on the shifter knob. The synchro will act like a clutch, the engine idle rpm will dip, and the car will start creeping forward. When it gets to the point that it is driving at idle speed with no slip in the synchro, it will drop into gear.

^ I do that sometimes while parking when I am on a slight downhill slope, just slight enough for the car to not roll on it's own. I just push on the 1st-gear synchro for a bit to start the car rolling.

See? I told you your car has more than 1 clutch! I win the bet. Now where's my case of beer?

Believe it or not, with the clutch up in neutral, by pushing against a syncro for a split second is a good way to tell the health of your syncros. Also, 1/2 a second isn't going to kill it. Plus the first gear syncro isn't ever really used much (maybe just if you autoX or something)
