Gas 3/4 tons are still thirsty and diesels have actually gone backwards with all the emissions garbage that's on them.
As far as modern diesels, the benefits of that application have shrunk, too. Cost of entry and maintenance is high compared to gas, while gas mileage is down. So, unless one us using it for heavy haul, it seems like a modern gasser is a good choice in most cases.
