So here's an update on my car.

They have found what they strongly believe to be the problem. The right front control arm mount to the chassis has an elongated mounting hole from the factory. The noise came from the control arm mounting bolt moving within the elongated hole back and forth, as evidenced by the noise heard upon decel and accell (later stages of issue surfacing). I do not know the state of the left front mounting hole.

So, apparently the elongated hole is this way from the factory and now my car is being investigated by the team of engineers stateside and broad to understand what the fix is or needs to be. Why most other Sonics don't have this happen - they don't know.

So while the issue is identified, the fix isn't readily apparent. So now I await word from the team of engineers.

New front clip.

I must say that as courteous as my service writer is, his technical knowledge is rather limited. I wasn't able to speak to the service manager, but will do so next week. I also plan to stop in at the shop and inspect the suspect mount myself - if possible. Due to my service writer's lack of technical knowledge and/or info, the details I have are rather spotty. I don't know which control arm is affected - whether it's UCA or LCA, or whether the other side is suspect or not.

I'll know more next week and I plan to begin escalating this issue. I understand a some time in the shop but I am going on 3 weeks now after owning the car for a month.

Also: I'm currently driving a 2.4 4cyl Equinox and I actually happen to like this car quite a bit for what it is. The rear room is absolutely cavernous, even for those passengers sitting directly behind my tall ass. Hell, I can sit comfortably behind myself. Yet, the vehicle doesn't feel too big or too bulky. It's geared great for most of the driving I do, but high speed balls-to-the-wall highway passing is lacking; predictably. Fuel economy is mediocre with a real world average of 22 and some change.

22 is better than my Grand Prix used to get, which is why I ditched it.

The bolt hole doesn't happen to be for alignment purposes, does it? Chrysler has done that in the past. Generally a normal round hole and eliptical head bolts are used though.

I got 2 crazy bug gites on my right shin. They're like normal mosquito bites, but the swelled area is like 3/4" in diameter and sticking 1/8" out.

Gold Bond FTW.

Busy week coming up. Work and family things Monday, anniversary Tuesday, house hunting and Springsteen concert at Fenway Wednesday, class Thursday and Friday (Henry's, Moofasa?), work and another Springsteen concert at Gillette Stadium on Saturday.

Gold Bond FTW.

Using the cream, or making a slurry from the powder?

I'm probably going today or next Saturday with my dad, but I don't see why I couldn't take a day off work and go again. I usually run out of time before I run out of stuff to do.

I got a bug bite under my belt somehow. Wearing a shirt tucked into pants all day. How...

Since I'm trying to be cheap with this VW motor, I remembered I have an old but functional coil from the Benz. It's not the traditional can-style coil, but it does have a positive and negative terminal, and an HT post on it. It was designed for a computerized ignition system, so I wonder if using points and condenser on it would harm it?

No promises, but I definitely want to look for a few things

What do you have to lose? A coil that you weren't going to use anyway?

I imagine it's not going to run well.
