I've done something almost as bad, if not worse, in the opposite direction. I was moving 45-50 mph and was going to shift 6-4 in order to pass a nard on the highway who didn't know that 70 was legal and appropriate. I overshot 4 and went to second. Luckily I only went to 5,500 RPM and redline is at 6,500 (I found that a couple weeks ago - rev-limiters are...interesting) and I thought that I'd blow up the engine, it only had 3,500 miles on it, but all was good when I realized my goof and shifted up through the gears. All was gravy.

I did pretty much the same thing with the 2008 VW I had when I was test driving it. 80mph, missed 5th and got 3rd. The salesman didn't care, even though white smoke came out. Apparently no damage was done as it ran great for 45,000 miles.
