Check Engine Light just came on..

Synchros shot? Weird noises while shifting? Not sure what needs to be replaced?

Check Engine Light just came on..

Post by Dblaze »

Went to Pep Boys to buy a new headlight and as soon as i parked, the C.E.L came on. Perfect timing, seeing as how I need to get inspected within 10 days. :( The error codes that he pulled up for me were P0170(Fuel injection System) and P0136(O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction). Are these easy fixes? and if so, what would i need? Any help is welcome.

When the light comes on...just come in.

Did it specify which bank was at fault for the O2 sensor?

A code does not mean a specific thing is wrong. It means a system has malfunctioned. You need to test every component in the system to discover what the specific issue is. The O2 sensor code for example could be a bad sensor, bad cat, bad computer, bad wiring, or something as stupid as a disconnected plug

They didn't say which bank it was, but when I ran searches for it, it seems like everyone had an issue with bank 1 sensor 2.
Maybe when I hit that bump earlier, it knocked something out? Don't even know what to look for yet.

I applaud you sir for your ability to post a proper "Check Engine Light" thread. It's so annoying when people post that they have a CEL but they don't post codes, or they get the codes pulled but don't get the code numbers, instead they just get the descriptions, or even worse they just get the parts store guy's diagnosis (which invariably is "O2 sensor" no matter what the code is).

I...umm....well, I don't have anything constructive to add, just that thank you/rant.

Learn to DIY. Usually, there's no such thing as a detailed how-to. You troubleshoot, you repair.
Service manual is almost always an aid when it's one of those "Yep. Happens to this make/model all the time" issues.

Usually with my store the customers are the ones who always think O2 sensor. I always tell them that its probably something else entirely unrelated and that O2 sensors should be the LAST thing they check. Ill pull a P0300 and they all jump right to oxygen sensors. I really want to smack them.

First thing to check for nearly every code should be vacuum lines and/or wiring

Workshop manual = service manual? I think.

I'm so tired I can hardly see. But yes. I'm thinking along the lines of a Haynes manual (Or a Chilton's manual, if you're so unfortunate to not be able to find anything else) or, if you're lucky, a factory service manual. Anyway...

My apologies for my garbled and likely only halfway intelligible speech. I'm going to go sleep and revisit this thread in the morning.

 Maybe it's just a matter of the internet being full of idiots who post that the AutoZone guy said it's the O2 sensor when he struggled to get them to understand that it's probably not. I only ever hear one side of the story, I guess.

I don't suppose your scanner can pull ABS codes? My 2002 GMC's ABS light is on and my ScanGauge doesn't seem able to pull the codes.

Unfortunately we can only do CELs.

Last GM truck ABS light I dealt with was an unplugged connector on the ABS control unit. Its a poorly designed clip in a horrible location. Id take a look at that first if you havent already because it really wouldnt surprise me if they are prone to breaking
