Squeaking sound as clutch is depressed?
Squeaking sound as clutch is depressed?
Hi all,
As background: I bought my first standard transmission car, a 5-speed 2003 Hyundai Elantra, about 3K miles ago -- now at 70K miles. Clutch needed to be replaced immediately after purchase, as it was slipping, so that was done about 3K miles ago. I've learned to drive stick on it (wow, serious quality of life upgrade) so it may have taken a dose of first-timer's abuse, but has been fine basically.
New issue: the car makes a low-frequency squeaking sound when I push the clutch pedal in. I'd describe the sound as a sad trombone. It makes noise mostly as the clutch is being pushed in -- almost no noise as it's being released except a slight "gasp". This happens regardless of whether the engine is on or off. Clutch fluid appears to be within normal range.
I've made a sound recording of it: http://www.nerdkits.com/files/clutchsounds.mp3 so you can listen as I push the clutch pedal in and release it 3 times.
Seems to be coming from somewhere in the vicinity of the clutch and clutch slave cylinder.
Any ideas? Is this a lubrication issue or something more serious?
Thanks,
Mike

Without listening to the sound, my guess is a squeaky pedal. My old car had a squeaky clutch that annoyed the crap out of me. Doesnt actually matter though. Spray some grease (not WD40) on the pivot point and see if that helps. Quick troubleshooting that doesnt cost much at all.

I dunno; that sounds less like a sad trombone and more like a dinosaur mating call. Do you feel any buzzing/vibration/resonance matching the sound as you depress the pedal? If so, definitely have at it with the grease.
If it feels smooth, then maybe it's a whoopie cushion left behind by the previous owner, in which case a pocket knife will probably work better than the grease, which would only serve to make it sound like a wet fart.
EDIT. And welcome to Standardshift! We need pictures of your car, your life story, and your mother's maiden birthweight as soon as possible.

Ok, I listened to it. I think watkins is right. Squeaky pedal..find where it attaches and anywhere the pedal arm rubs anything, and give it some grease as described above.

Squeaky pedal. Mine squeaks more often than not, but I've gotten used to it. My dad keeps telling me to put grease on there but I don't want to risk it. I think it was because I put silicone grease on there before and I'm pretty damn sure that's what deteriorated the seals on the master and slave cylinder. (Grease travelled from the rod to the cylinder, thereby screwing over my seals)

My pedal squeaks. I sprayed WL grease on it and it worked for a day. I wasn't really generous with it, so that might be why. Didn't wanna chance it. But yeah, try some grease to get rid of the noise. I've learned to deal with the noise.

As you apply force to the pedal, your gluteus maximus involuntarily releases your anal spincter and you fart. Take a vaseline suppository and insert it vigorously . Gas will sill escape, but the tone will change. It will sound more like the brake booster breathing than a fart.

Thanks all... of course, the "dinosaur mating call" went away by itself! Perhaps the threat of all your powers combined made it stop. Or I just got used to it.

I think the cat living in his instrument panel died. Sure, the noise is gone, but the stink is coming up fast.
