i tried putting the key in the door...it wouldn't go in...no amounts of shoving would do.

Next time, don't rush things. Is it possible that the passenger door is NOT the original and the lock cylinder is from the donor vehicle?
If it's original, maybe the lock is rusted. Try some light oil, like 3-in-1, or hose it down with WD-40, or Kroil, to see if you can break it free.
