Clutch out TWANG noise on new subie
Here is the senerio:
(2009 impreza... regular nat. asp. 2.5i)
1. back out slowly from parking spot...
2. put in first and ease forward...
3. once clutch is fully engaged, "Twang" noise.
The noise is louder if you are moving faster when the clutch is finally all the way out.
The noise is coming from the right rear area of the car.
The noise will only happen once... then only again if the car is cold and the above is repeated.
Any ideas?

Re: Clutch out TWANG noise on new subie
hmmmm .... I guess no one else has either had this issue, or knows what to do about it?
Doesn't look good.
It is in for a under-warranty inspection for this right now.
We will see what the shop says.

Re: Clutch out TWANG noise on new subie
i don't know of anyone on this forum that has the same year/model car, so i don't think that any of us have ever heard of this "twang" noise, nor can i even think of what that noise sounds like.
i would highly recommend that you ask this question on a subaru forum, instead. you'll most likely get better responses.
hope it isn't anything major. good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion.
I have searched through countless forums, only to find nothing so far.
I guess I will have to put faith in the shop.

if the shop still doesn't find anything, you might want to make a recording of it with the windows down and someone recording in the back seat towards where the sound is coming from.

That could work.... just last night I managed to have the sound come from the front.
And today it seemed more centered, or right under me.
Where the mechanical cause is and where the sound reverberates to (and is heard) may be different.
Shop said if they couldn't duplicate it, they would call me and I could come duplicate it for them.
One way or another, they will hear it.

Re: Clutch out TWANG noise on new subie
I have 2 ideas of what this could be.
1. The clutch pedal return spring is bent slightly and moves just a little bit when you release the pedal, and when you get off the pedal, the spring unseats slightly, (think guitar string almost), and makes a "twang" noise.
-or-
2. One of the "leaves" on the pressure plate that releases the clutch disc is catching on something, causing the "twang"
Just my $.02.

...or think about exhaust system hangers, heat shields, etc. Could be that when drive torque is reversed, powertrain moves and exhaust shifts position. Application of drive torque in forward direction might then pull or push the exhaust back to it's normal position. Just a thought.

Whatever it is... seems to always be there, but getting quieter.
Shop says its "nothing" and couldn't ever reproduce it.
Now I have documentation of that anyway... so if anything happens, I got my backside covered.
