gas tank.

Synchros shot? Weird noises while shifting? Not sure what needs to be replaced?

Post by wannabe »

two things: where can i find out the size (gallons) of my gas tank?

also...when i fill it up, it overflows (near the "click") i know thats not normal. haha. so do i have a hole or what? and is the top of the gas tank visible from under an unraised car?

You're expected to make it last a lot of miles. :)

Have you tried pumping at a different gas station? The nozzle is probably to blame for your spillage. They're pretty sensitive to fumes coming back at them, even if you pump into a gas can with a plain hole at the top and don't seal the nozzle to it, you can still get auto-shutoff...so for your car, pumping with it fully inserted into the hole should easily cause auto-shutoff.

Most gas tanks have a second line going down to the tank; sort of a fuel-door-pocket spill drain, but I believe it also acts as a vent allowing air to escape as you fill the tank; if this is plugged, then air will try to evacuate the tank through the main fill nozzle, which causes bubbling and splashback that could easily shut off the pump or spill out.

I'm assuming you probably lock the pump handle in the 'high' position (full speed fill). You may want to try filling up slower, locking the handle on the 'low' setting, and see if that helps.

I fill my tank up on 'low' anyway, because it gives me enough time to fill out my mileage log :)

The locking position part of the handle is removed on pumps in RI/MA/CT, to try to force you to stand there and hold it. It's illegal to stick your gas cap (or anything else) in the handle while it fills, too. Depending on my mood and what objects I have available, I do it anyway...yeah, I'm a rebel!!! :P

I fill mine until it clicks off the first time, get a receipt, and write odometer and trip info on the receipt. Then when I get home I put the data into my log.

I don't keep a mileage log but I do track consumption at every fill up. I always fill to full tank, I hate filling up part-way.

Since I calculate MPG at every fill up, I can tell how I'm doing part way through the tank.

This only applies to MKV Rabbits:

- gas light goes on at ~355 miles - I'm looking at around 27/28 mpg. 370 miles or so - 29 mpg. 390miles - 30+ MPG.
- generally with the way I drive I can do 375-390 miles before the gas light goes on. It is usually a week of driving. This is not hypermiling.
- I know I'm doing good if by half-tank mark I'm at or over 250 miles from full

You leave the nozzle unattended?
I do fill out the log from the driver's seat, while talking on my cellphone and smoking two cigarettes at once. California has those newfangled and ridiculously effective vapor-recapture nozzles on all the fill stations around me, so it's nigh impossible to get a spill condition with them.

I worked at a gas station..... some cars are more prone to splashing out then others..... when i'm serving 5 people at a time i throw it in click the thing on and move to the next person, if it splashes back who gives a rats..... its not going back into the gas stations tank its going on the ground... my mr2 i have filled to the point where the gas cap has touched the gas when i put it back in... apparently its bad for something filling over the first click.... although when there is tons of pressure in the tank false clicks occur.

I was just being playful :D

Fact is, for the reasons you mentioned, synthetic fleece hoodies are far more dangerous than cellphones and cigarettes. Cigarette lighters, on the other hand, are pretty unsafe
