Shifter Knob and Boot
Shifter Knob and Boot
I'm not sure if this is the best place to put this but yea. On my nissan sentra I have the accodian-like boot and was wondering if it is possible to change...I'v taken the original knob off...took a lot of work but it finally came off and when I took the boot off it just had rubber ends on the corners and sides that stick down inbetween the concole and metal part...is it possible to get a different one to replace or is it just too old or something? Theres not like a frame or anything, just two metal clip like things on the top and bottom that snap on and off, thanks for any input.

Re: Shifter Knob and Boot
My car originally came with a shift boot but it was ripped, so i took it to the upholsters and got one stitched up so I'd say it wouldn't be to hard just need the dimensions.

Re: Shifter Knob and Boot
Ask about it at an upholstery shop. Any decent one should be able to do something like that.
I drive a Phantom Black 2005 GTO M6. I commute in a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.

go to a junkyard and find a boot you like, buy it, put it in. is not rocket science

An upholstery store should be able to make you one.

Nothing is "Rocket Science" until you do it wrong several times in a row and it's cost you so much time and money that wish you hadn't touched it at all. There are some people who design shift boots for a living and they make it look easier than it really is.
Chief issues to concern yourself with when replacing the boot are making sure that the new boot doesn't restrict shifter travel such that it pulls the shifter out of gear or that excess boot material doesn't bunch-up and block the lever from going into gear.
If the old boot is torn, you could hunt for an identical but less-experienced boot at a junkyard or make your own/have one made from vinyl fabric or leather. Be prepared to iterate on the design. Leather and vinyl fabric don't stretch like the original molded vinyl boot did. Also, if the original boot design was convoluted, it may not be possible to recreate the exact shape. Still, if you are trying for a new look, try stitching together some heavy cloth, like canvas, until you get it to look and perform well. Then you can use that as the template to make one out of your preferred material. French seams, and body-colored thread look great and really personalize the boot. You can also try to either match the boot color or make it a contrasting color. Oh, and the graining and the gloss are also variables. You can bury an o-ring inside to hold it tight to the shift lever, or go with a lace-up, zip-up or snap closure.

Oddly enough, Ricerzone often has a few good ones. Id spend some time at car parts stores and look into what they have.

Sorry, twss?
Price would vary. I wouldn't charge too much. Depends on what you get. You'd have to take measurements of the end of the gearshift lever and send some photos and stuff.
