Windshield Washer Nozzle replacement

Post by bk7794 »

My car has one of those old style nozzles that just spray a line of fluid onto the windshield. On newer cars they have more of a spray rather than a clear line that doesn't wash the entire windshield. I guess that its called the fan portion.

Does anyone know if they sell aftermarket nozzles that help with this issue?

I was thinking maybe this.

I know this is of no help to you, but I've always like how some domestics incorporated the nozzles into the wiper arm. It gave a great coverage over the entire swipe field of the wipers.

I suggested that in IRC. It would not be difficult to adapt those nozzles. They merely clip on to the wiper arm, which does not have any form of receptacle for them.

Other ideas:
- Ricer-style replacement nozzles easily found in parts stores and eBay, just don't hook up the ricer LEDs.
- OEM replacement nozzles from a newer similar model (as in that link)...could grab them at the junkyard.
- System adapted from another car. The ones on my Buick would easily fit any car, although they don't provide a mist or fan, just a split squirt. (I find it quite satisfactory, maybe my split streams are better.)

Washer systems are simple and the stakes are low (if your mod fails you just go without squirting until you fix it, unless your arm-mounted nozzles scrape your glass).

This is what you need!

Pieces of brass tubing, about the diameter of a ball-point pen cartridge, crimped on the end to form two streams of washer-fluid.

BTW, it was not an electric pump!

It was not a vacuum-actuated pump!

It was a thumb-actuated pump!

On a cold day, the effort to pump the fluid was so high that my thumb said "Push" for at least 10 minutes after I sprayed the windshield.

...and we liked it. It was good enough. Ewe best bleef we din waste much washer fluid.

So, the best windshield washer I ever had was on my 1983 Gooole. The wiper arm motion was delayed until after the pump sprayed fluid onto the windshield and the fluidic nozzle sprayed the ENTIRE windshield. I don't know about any of use, but I know that I was UNWORTHY of that windshield washer.

That's exactly what's on my car. You can just bend it any which way you want for your preferred aim.

Mine does have an electric pump though. OEM was an electric pump built in to the wiper motor housing. Clutch master cylinder needed the space near the firewall where the existing reservoir was so I put a different shaped reservoir way up front and used the pump that came with that reservoir.

I AM SO JELLY!

...well actually the Buick's squirter gets the glass sufficiently wet before the wipers actually begin to move, and it parks the wipers quickly after I stop operating the button. However, one of my biggest complaints about all of the more modern vehicles I've had is always that the wipers scrape all the way up the dry, abrasive salt-covered glass before a squirt comes out. Then, when I'm done squirting, the wipers keep going for way too long.

I keep thinking I'm going to rewire my 2002 GMC so it behaves better, that should be easy. It's in a long list of other small tasks I'll never get around to doing.

I may try to get an RSX washer. But the more I think of it, the more I noticed that when I am driving 65mph and I rinse the windshield with my current nozzle, the water runs up the windshield anyways. The blade then spreads the water around. I will keep you guys posted on what I decide to do.

I replaced my washer nozzles with a pair from a two-generations-ago Focus hatch. Way better having the fan spray instead of random jets that squirted wherever they pleased.
