Dulling Shiny Leather?

Post by six »

Hey guys.

You know how when cars are new, the leather is nice, soft, and most of all, matte and texturized? Then, you know how over time, the leather gets shiny and smooth (and harder)?

Is there any way to restore the smooth shiny leather back to the matte soft leather it used to be? Or is it too late by the time it gets shiny? The headrest of the seats are still like the soft new leather, but the seats themselves (in the Acura) are getting shiny. Do leather conditioners get rid of the shinyness?

Any suggestions? Thanks :)

Really? All-purpose cleaner? Is that really safe for leathers?

Thanks for the suggestions :) Now I got to find out where to get this Leatherique stuff you are talking about...

I agree with paul34. Even though this may not help, I have this old bottle of Turtle Wax leather conditioner I use for my shift boot. It looks a little too shiny when you apply it, but after a few hours, it restores it pretty nicely. My grandfather used it on his old car and it kept the leather pretty nice.

I found a complete leather restoration and care kit that is made by Connolly Leather. I don't think we can get any better than Connolly Leather, which is used by Rolls, Bentley, Ferrari, just to name a few. Comes with Connolly Concentrated Cleaner, Connolly Hide Care leather conditioner, microfiber and foam applicator pads, and microfiber towels. Just got to get a stiff brush, and a free afternoon, and it will be great. I wonder if it will work on the leather steering wheel, since that has gotten shiny, really shiny.

hahaha

I kinda figured it was body oils and sweat. I think about that every time I grip the steering wheel hard for sharp turns. :( Glad to know I can do something about it.

One more thing... the car has perforated leather for parts of the seat and steering wheel. Does that matter, for the cleaning and conditioning?

I was going to get a leather telescoping steering wheel at the junkyard but I couldn't figure out how to get it off. Yuck.
