Does Wax Go Bad?

Post by six »

I was looking through some junk in my garage and noticed that I have a brand new unopened bottle of Collinite 845. Found money!

Anyway, it has to be at least three years old. Would it still be good? Do liquid waxes "expire?"

Shake it well and try it on a lawnmower first. If it looks good, it probably is, although you might have to wax it more often. And even if it was bad, I seriously doubt it could do anything to the paint of your car - just wash it off.

Not sure about liquid, but I used some 2 year old hard shell carnauba wax on the weekend. There was a dried out portion on the top, but once I cleaned that off with a rag, the rest of it went on fine.

Yes, wax deteriorates. Carnauba deteriorates faster than others, and should technically be refrigerated or kept in a cool environment to avoid rapid deterioration. Basically, unless it's 100% synthetic, it will deteriorate if just left sitting.

By the time a dried layer appears on the top of wax, I wouldn't be using it anymore. Carnauba wax is easily marked as being totally shot by its color as compared to the color it had when brand new.

My dad's truck. That's what happens.

If you detailed it perfectly, crossed every I and dotted every T, it'll still look good. However, it just plain won't look good enough. That's why we cracked open some new wax and put two more coats on real, real heavy.

The truck looks good. It just looked like absolute shit with that first coat of wax on it. The original color of that wax was an off-white. The deteriorated bottle was about as yellow as piss.

I'll have to post teh before/after pics on here sometime soon.
