Driving to Chalk River going 90-100 the entire time, then took the 417 to Ottawa going 110 the entire time, I hit 5.8 L/100 KM (40.5 mpg) really easily - this is on twisting roads so i drove to have fun on them. I could have probably hit straight 5 (47 MPG) if properly motivated on that going 90 the entire way in fifth, managing throttle up hills and such.

Coming home on the 401 with a passenger going 120 I was at 6.8 L/100km (34.5 mpg) and the tank got me pretty mcuh exactly ottawa to home, nowhere near my old Jetta which would get 5 at that speed, but I figure if I eased off by ten kph I could have a way better tank.

AC on the entire time on both trips.

Doesn't everyone use base 10?

But getting back on topic, I'm surprised you got better mileage in your old Jetta than in your Fit. Was it a diesel Jetta?

A/C really grabs a lot out of the car. I once got my worst mileage ever. I think it was like 32mpg. It was all driving with the A/C. Oddly enough I do get 40mpg on the highway. I could barely hit 40 mpg with my 91. I'd get about 38 or 39. Really frustrating sometimes. That has a slightly slightly longer gear ration I believe. Plus my car is probably 200 or so pounds heavier.

I wish the "standard" units of measure were closer to the metric units. To this day I forget how many feet are in a mile.

I do know that many people think us Minnesotans are weird because we measure distance in time. For Insurance somebody will ask how far away we live from a certain destination and the answer is invariably a time measurement "I live 20 minutes away from that." I've wondered if this is regional because I've never heard an out-of-towner use similar verbiage.

That's standard in RI, and I think MA and CT too.

In RI we also use landmarks that don't exist anymore. "Turn right where the Almacs supermarket used to be, then left at the place where they tore down the movie theater."

Many Rhode Islanders have a skewed sense of distance too; an hour drive might involve packing a lunch (unless they're going to The Middle Of Nowhere Diner), and a two hour drive might involve booking a hotel.

Binary translator says: "No, not everyone does."

Thanks, Squint! But I have to say, it's been a while since I've seen a binary speedometer. Or one with Roman numerals ...

Easy to remember if you're a drag racer. I spent a lot of time at the track, so I know that the track is a quarter mile, so it's also know as the 1320. Multiply that by four and you have 5280.

On the Mass Pike they have the worst signs. ''25 miles 23 minutes to I-495'' I mean it's helpful but sometimes it doesn't really mean anything.

I know in Long Island they use signs that just say Traffic moving well.

I feel bad that we're now cluttering up his thread about nonsense now.

Few things in Rhode Island are NOT skewed. That is a weird state.

Yeah, would regularly get 40+ MPG highway without trying particularly hard

Another one: Getting onto I-95 from Route 2 in Lexington MA, there is a sign that says "I-95 Gloucester/Attleboro." As compass points, those two towns could not be more random. I'd like to know who picked them over "New Hampshire/Rhode Island" or just "North/South."

See, that's why diesels are so alluring. I need to own one at some point.
