Today:
- Fixed air conditioning (can of sealant, can of ester oil, cans of R-134a; it had already been converted)
- Oil change
- Topped off transmission fluid
- Fixed backup lights that weren't working.
- Fixed the random "brake" light on the dash, turns out the wire to the sensor was broken off and its exposed end was touching the frame
- Measured rear brake lines since I'll be replacing them when I get started on the brake project soon (I've got a shitload of parts, gonna replace calipers/wheel cylinders/friction materials (of course)/all hardware kits/rear hose/rear pipes and a bunch of other crap not necessarily brake-related)

Tell me how that can of sealant works. I got an 01 Taurus that needs a compressor and a few other related A/C parts. If sealant can be used it'll save me some time..and money

Ask me next summer, I guess. It was Super Seal, which gets good reviews.

WTF! In my big Rockauto order I ordered a few air filters. At $1.44 each (now down to 86 cents!) I was willing to give Fram a chance despite their dangerously awful oil filters. I paid no attention to the fact that they were Fram's "AirHog" line.

Well, I went to install one a few minutes ago and realized it's a K&N style reusable oilable filter. D'oh! Now I have to see if anybody has tested Fram AirHog media for filtering efficacy...I just wanted a plain old paper filter and at a buck and a half I had no reason to think it'd be anything else.

That ridiculously cheap. I didn't realize you could get oil filters for so little. I mean, I usually just buy the ones when they have oil/filter sales... but still.

I guess it's true when they say you pay for the brand.

Air filters, not oil filters. Stuff for my car is cheap, stuff from Rockauto is cheap, and stuff from Rockauto for my car is incredibly cheap...that's quite compatible with my financial condition and the project goals.

Ok, checked Rockauto. Oil filters start at $1.63 for Pronto and Pentius brand. Mann goes for $2.41, Bosch for $3, AC Delco for $3.30. IIRC I pay less than $4.50 for AC Delco at Walmart, though those are the PF47e instead of the original PF47 at Rockauto for $3.30. I should have bought a bunch of those.

Wix is $4.57, Mann $5.18, AC Delco 5.83...still good prices.

The AirHogs are all gone now, I guess 86 cents was enough for somebody to buy the rest. Probably somebody on the west coast, I bet shipping from Rockauto is a lot cheaper there. I checked, if I only ordered air filters shipping was going to be like $15. Small orders from Rockauto are ruined for me by shipping, almost nothing gets shipped here for less than $10. Big orders work well, especially when they're lots of small parts.

Yep, I can't read. It's official.

Didn't turn a single bolt all summer...I had planned a whole bunch of stuff but never got my ass in gear. Now I'm due for state inspection and rushing to get some of it done.

Over the past week I replaced:
Calipers, rotors, wheel bearings, pads, hoses.
Wheel cylinders, almost all hardware, shoes, one leaky hard line.
All brake fluid.
I also removed, cleaned up, sanded, and anti-seized one brake hard line whose flare nut was moderately (but not irrevocably) seized to the line.

I think I spent 3x as much time searching for tools, buying parts, and stopping for lunch than I spent actually turning bolts.

I did learn to flare brake line, it's pretty easy...my practice flares were lopsided but my production flares were 100% perfect.

Tonight, after work, in the dark, I worked on exhaust hangers. Near the muffler is a metal strap with a rubber center. A bracket, bolted to a standard exhaust clamp, slides into the hanger. This is actually a very versatile and easy system. I have spares that I bought cheap from Rockauto and I'll probably be using them in at least one place (near the catalytic converter) where the original hanger setup may now be impractical.

Anyway, thanks to a hurried and underbudgeted muffler replacement last year it didn't line up anymore and was held in place by craploads of baling wire. Tonight I simply drilled a couple new holes and moved the bracket over so it lines up. Who knew it was so easy? I had to use one self-tapping bolt since there's no access to put on a nut.

I also added an OEM-style hanger at the end of the tailpipe. This one is a bit odd and I'm not sure I did it right. For some reason it was never there. There was no evidence of its rusted out remains. Oh well, it's better than the craploads of wire I used there and will pass inspection.

Gotta grab a few exhaust clamps and see about adding hangers near the cat and halfway along the tailpipe, where there used to be some sort of hanger.

A few other thoughts I forgot to mention:

Why can't my wife's 2000 Isuzu or my 2002 GMC be as un-rusted and un-seized as this car? Nuts and bolts that have had 32 years to rust-weld not only came apart reasonably with a little bit of wirebrushing and a quick spray of PB Blaster, but they were good enough to re-use. I didn't even need to use a torch.

I got a decent compressor last winter and haven't bothered with the two air ratchets I have. Why not? I got tired of cranking the ratchet and decided to use the air ratchet to do most of the turning...so nice! I'll be using that some more. Before I got the compressor I would have used my cordless drill, but that requires more clearance. (You might be thinking it lacks power but mine has plenty of torque, and either way the tightest part is still done by hand.)

Working on exhaust in the dark with decent lighting is easier than daylight in the car's shadow.

The weather was nigh-on perfect. It was just right for jeans (not shorts), sandals, and short sleeve shirt. I might have liked it a little cooler, my hands were getting sweaty in gloves.

Sounds like me. I have all these plans and end up goofing off instead Good to hear! Any pics?

I still have to do one or two more hangers...one near the cat is in dire need, and one halfway along the tailpipe is unnecessary but I can see it was designed to have one there so I might as well. (Granted, it was also designed for a joint in the tailpipe there where a resonator was originally equipped, instead of a one-piece pipe.) I'll get pics the next time I work on it, if I remember.

Man, I was really stoked that I had such a decent evening working on it when I expected it to be torture.
