I'm sure they work just fine for the car in stock shape. There is absolutely no need to increase unsprung weight in this case. Careful choice of pad compound may improve performance but otherwise it should be fine.

You should get some manly brakes, like these.
I just saw an RX-8 racing autocross this morning. Wasn't as fast as the Neons, but he was having fun and it ran OK.

Why so I can be more like these guys?1974Alfa5spd wrote:Lol stock brakes. Those are facking puny for a sports car.
You should get some manly brakes, like these.
1. The suspension is unloaded with the car on the jack, so the knuckle and rotor sit lower relative to the wheel well, making them appear smaller.
2. With a big brake kit, I would not be able to run my winter wheels and tires.
3. As Tony said, the brakes are quite adequate for the job. Remember, this is not a 4000 lb German brick. If anything, I might go with a more aggressive pad when it comes time to change them.

Figured I'd bump this thread with a new pic.
Now at 60k miles.
Also, I haz brake pad deposits soon after a recent brake job Or at least I hope they're deposits and not an actual warped rotor. Maybe I was e little over-enthusiastic testing out the new pads?
I guess I'll try re-bedding them to see if it helps... Anyone have better ideas short of re-surfacing the rotor?

are you starting to worry about apex seals now? I have read some horror stories of rx8s around 70k miles.

Re: Jastreb's 2009 Mazda Rx-8, "Isabella"
The blown seals were more of an issue for early production (2004-2005) RX-8s. Mazda has since made improvements to address seal lubrication (cue Rope with another random picture ). For Series II RX-8s (MY2009+), an extra oil injector was added to shoot oil at the apex seal, increased oil pressure etc..., and so far there have reportedly been very few failures. So no, I'm not worried.AHTOXA wrote:are you starting to worry about apex seals now? I have read some horror stories of rx8s around 70k miles.

It's likely that forums like The Car Lounge are blowing things out of proportion. It just seemed to me that there were RX8 owners and former owners on there that made it sounds like the Renesis would blow no matter what.

Apex seals have leaked since the beginnings of time.

I really, really like the look of the post-facelift RX-8s. Even the stock wheels are great.

Thanks! Though I remember you posting some great roadside scenery shots yourself.94Corolla5Speed wrote:So beautiful and jealous. Of the car and scenery alike.
Not all fun and games though. I've got the dreaded ambiguous P0139 - Rear HO2S circuit (O2 sensor) slow response... Car seems to be running fine though... This will likely distract me from taking care of my annoying-ass brakes this week.

Brakes first. P0139 can wait, it's no big deal.Jastreb wrote:Not all fun and games though. I've got the dreaded ambiguous P0139 - Rear HO2S circuit (O2 sensor) slow response... Car seems to be running fine though... This will likely distract me from taking care of my annoying-ass brakes this week.

Re: Jastreb's 2009 Mazda Rx-8, "Isabella"
Well the brake issues are an annoying squeal caused by missing anti-squeal shims, and pad deposits on the rotor leading to brake judder. Going to take the rotors off and scrub with brake cleaner. So nothing super-critical. On the other hand, I found a loose hose-clamp between the air box and the throttle body (after the MAF). Seems like I jostled the airbox around too much when I was changing the air filter 2 days ago. Tightened it up, and hoping this takes care of the code. (EDIT: Code is gone for now.)
