Don't forget the crap, arrests, lycra shorts, diarrhea, and lube (hehehe, lube...). That last is actually probably positive, but the word lube is funny so I just wanted to mention it. I don't remember having any issues with the ones Ma Bell provided. We didn't own them - paid monthly lease fees, but they were built like masonry feces domiciles. After the phone company was broken-up, the cheap junk started appearing. I don't even want to talk about the horrid durability of anything that fits in our pockets.

From what I've heard the apex seals usually go out like clockwork at about 60K. Doesn't sound like it owes you anything.

Yeah, having read other auto forums, 60-80k is usually the standard for apex seals.

So what are you going to do? Are you going to be looking at a rebuild or replacing the car?Jastreb wrote:Well, it appears 1 of my rotors is on the way out. 97k miles

As someone who only has a basic understanding of rotary engines, does this mean that they typicaly need more routine "overhaul" type maintenance than typical 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engines? Is the rest of their maintenance lower to counter that higher cost? Otherwise, I can see a clear reason why they haven't caught on more, beyond the "it's different that what we're used to" argument you'll get from the general, non-caring public.IMBoring25 wrote:From what I've heard the apex seals usually go out like clockwork at about 60K. My experience is also limited, but yes, rotary motors do need much more frequent overhaul. Their biggest issue are the apex seals, which will wear out far sooner than, say, piston rings.Squint wrote:As someone who only has a basic understanding of rotary engines, does this mean that they typicaly need more routine "overhaul" type maintenance than typical 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engines? The rest of the maintenance isn't lower, either, as it doesn't really get much lower than nothing but oil changes on modern timing-chain driven motors. Even if you have a timing belt/waterpump to be done around 100k miles, it's still cheaper than apex seals.
Plus, a few RX-8 owners run pre-mix (oil and gasoline) when filling up, so that adds into the cost. It's not required, through, as the RX-8 has an oiling system, but forums have claimed better gas mileage with pre-mix.
