Good luck finding either of those cars in decent condition...you'll need even more luck to get it cheaply.

An early '90s Ford Escort has the cheapest parts prices around, is still pretty easy to find, doesn't fetch high prices, is efficient, and can be had in a wagon with a manual transmission.

If it's part time 4wd, she'd have to learn how to use it.

Was it a stick? Can you switch on the fly?
Do you know why you never use 4wd on dry pavement?

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. Just trying to help.

If you use 4wd on dry pavement, you get driveline bind, and it'll crack the transfer case, which = lots of money.

I'd love one for snow and ice though. They'd still slip then, at least I believe so.

Thanks mtheis for the knowledge.

Driveline bind is highly unpleasant, and it's certainly rough on components. I don't doubt that it it can crack the T-case, but I've never actually heard of it happening. Is it more common for the specific vehicles being discussed in this thread?

I've seen it happen. Dude with a little Jeep, transfer case was split wide open along one side. You see some of the most gut wrenching shit on car forums.

Well, anything's possible.
