Drivin' a Real Man's Vehicle

Post by Rope-Pusher »

...and I hope that man doesn't find out about it and beat the snot out of me.
Image
2010 Dodge Ram Laramie 4x4 3500 Crew cab mit der Cummins 6.7L I6 Turbo Diesel und der G56 mit der "Granny Gear". Shift from 3rd to 4th is about 160mm at the top of knob position. Reverse is to the left of 2nd, with a crash-through detent that works quite well for keeping me from checking it out on a spirited 3.2 downshift.

1st is too low to be practical for my unloaded driving (6-sumpin ta one).

2nd is 3-sumpin ta one and a better choice for starting from rest.

70 mph comes at 2100 rpm in 6th.

Fuel mileage in town is about 15 mpg.

The special towing mirrors each stick out about a foot past the doorskin.

The transfer case is shift by wire, using a rotary dial.

I've backed it up into my driveway about 5 times now and, despite it's size, the process is easier than with my Liberty. The back-up alarm gets perturbed when I get within 6 feet of the closed garage door.

It's been a while since I've driven a pick-m-up, but I felt at-ease on the freeway and in traffic on surface streets.

Sticker price is......$52,330

Sadly, no. Then the bed would have been as wide as the mirrors. When I drive it, I just feel like pulling trees from the ground and towing buildings to new locations.

Meh, doesn't take a 3500 with a big-displacement diesel to do those things...my 1500 has pulled a couple large stumps (one struck back, once it came out it tipped over and dinged my tailgate) and straightened a building that was leaning (not a huge building, but not a Home Depot tool shed either).

Ok, so "back in the position where it belongs" isn't really a "new location"...

Hell, I've pulled more than one stump right out of the ground with my 4Runner. Put it in 4LO and it has enough grunt to rip a decent size stump right out by the roots.

If I wanted a big truck, I would buy a freaking KrAZ-255B instead of an American toy truck. Now THAT is a real man's vehicle ;)

Don't be ridiculous. You don't need a truck THAT big.
You do know that American pick-m-ups are classified as "Light-Duty Trucks", right? No special licenses and no special training. Any 16-year-old can drive one.

The Ram will tow this:

Which is like towing your dormitory. Anything with a higher towing capacity is superfluous. They would never give you permission to tow your dormitory down to Florida for the winter, would they?

Rope-Pusher, it's not about the size, it's about labeling the Ram as "a real man's vehicle". If your 16-year-old daughter can drive it, then it's not a real man's vehicle :D

Also, the KrAZ can tow this:

...but they would tax you so much for every meter you pulled it that it would be cost-prohibitive, and they would make you take classes and get certified in Castle Relocation.

I should have had my camera turned on so you could see that my tongue was not in my cheek when I called it "A Real Man's Vehicle"

I was stuck for an hour in stop-n-go traffic this morning - some tractor-trailer accident a few miles up the road virtually stopped traffic in all lanes. After the wrecker towed the carcass away, it was as if someone had flushed a toilet. All lanes went from a standstill to 60 mph very quickly. It took a few more miles until normal speeds were reached. When I got out of the Ram at work, my clutch leg was so buff that I began to walk in clockwise circles.
