Who will win?

Post by ihartmacz »

1993 Pontiac Sunbird 3.1L V6/5speed 140hp 185ft-lbs torque
vs.
1998 Ford Escort ZX2 2.0L i4/5speed 130hp 135ft-bls torque

I will soon be racing this car. my friend has it and shes been driving a 5 speed longer than me but shes been mainly using the gearbox economicaly. She doesn't even downshift when she tries to accellerate... she jst floors it.

I think that I can win if i get a good launch and shift at high RPMs.

What do you people think?

Both cars are 100% STOCK

I don't know much about either car, but from the numbers, I would guess the sunbird, because in dragging, there really is no need to downshift, but if she doesn't know how to shift for aggressive driving, then you have pretty much automatically won the race. Just curious, which car has a better power/weight ratio?

Sunbird = 140/2484 = 1:17.75
Escort = 130/2478 = 1:19.06

I'm starting to loose hope now

i think the older sunbirds and cavaliers were heavier than the newer sunfires and cavs and probably the newer escorts too. i'm too lazy to look up the weights, but edmunds.com/used should have 'em listed under specifications for each car 8) .

don't forget the torque factor :lol:
the hp difference looks negligible 8) .
do you know the gear ratios?
so far the sunbird looks better, based on what we know about it:
more torque
only 6 pounds heavier :wink:

ull lose. since both are manuals the horsepower isnt as negligable as it would be if one was an auto. with the weight being almost exact it comes down to sheer power. unless shes a bad shifter u dont dont have a chance. 10 hp is alot when your racing same weight. u better hope she cant shift

yeah, double clutch your shifts and get em fast, and you'll beat her, especially if she always shifts for economy

It will probably be the torque that helps the sunbird and not the hp, unless she knows how to rev it up just right to actually take advantage of those 10 extra horses (if it still has them after all these years).

Well this wont happen for a while. She wont get back into town until the 22nd.

I'm kinda thinking about getting a short-ram intake or a K&N filter.

Where do you guys think I should shift? Where the engine make the most torque (4250rpm) or HP(5750rpm)?

Other than maybe making your engine sound cooler, I don't think an intake by itself will make your car faster. Of course, I got a speeding ticket the night I put in my intake :oops: :lol: . Where's your redline? I'd shift around peak hp and tell your friend to shift at peak torque :lol: 8) .

i know nothing about either car, but unless the gearing is complete $hit in the sunbird it should be faster due to it's greater torque and lower weight ... but of course, driving plays a part too.
