ok a little searching on IWSTI shows me that i don't really need a turbo timer on the STi b/c the turbo is oil AND water cooled, so the water continues to cool the turbo after the car is shut off. apparently a coolant tank of water sitting near the hot turbo creates a convection current keeping the water flowing through the turbo after the car is shut off.

Newer Subarus don't need to idle. The turbos are water cooled. However, it wouldn't hurt to idle for around 30 seconds if you were romping on it right before you parked. The time it takes to drive to your house and up your driveway is enough to cool down the turbo.

well i wish i had known that :? a full 1-2 minutes? wouldn't the manufacturer (assuming completely stock car) have taken into consideration that people aren't going to do this a lot of the time? what are the bad effects of not doing it? what if you are just off boost for a minute or 2 before shutting it down, like driving slowly through my subdivision and up my driveway?
I've never owned a turbo, but I understand the reason for doing this, to circulate some cool oil into the turbo off-boost, rather than just shut it down hot and let the oil that's stuck in there cook to a fine sludge.

If you're supposed to idle for 1-2 minutes, then it makes sense that if you're off boost for the 1-2 minutes before shutting down, whether you're idling or driving slowly, it should be OK. Or if you're worried about it, you can always get a turbo timer.

The previous owner of my ZX wrecked the turbos b/c he never idled the car and the oild in the turbo's cooked. the end result: Paolo got new turbo's for 0$ :D

Jomo, just idle it for 30 seconds or so, it won't kill you. You must be fully stopped, and just sit there for 30 seconds. Your car has served you well thus far, it won't kill you to let it idle. Even water/oil cooled turbos need time to spool. just give it a minute and sammy will thank you.

yeah you're probably right, better safe than sorry. i probably usually am idling for 30 seconds or so anyway as i engage the parking brake, put down the garage door, put up my windows, take off my sunglasses and seat belt, etc :P

Just don't turn the car off right away after a spirited drive. Taking it around the block for a minute or two should do it. On the other side, it's so cool to see your turbo glow in the dark

The NASIOC turbo timer FAQ says this probably isn't necessary, at least for modern Subarus.

"2002MY WRX TURBO COOL DOWN PROCEDURE
FHI's position regarding this is that it is not necessary to perform a "cool down/idling" procedure, as was recommended with past turbo models. Our current 2.0L turbo engine has a far greater cooling capacity and, coupled with technology advances, makes this practice no longer necessary. This explains why information about cool down is not included in the 2002MY Impreza Owner's Manual."

But of course if you are still worried about it, read the rest of that FAQ to learn how to install a turbo-timer, which keeps the engine idling for a minute after you remove the keys to allow it time to cool down.

Edit: Well that was somewhat redundant. Sorry.

yes, yes it is :D :D :D but after a week or 2, you will get used to it, and then it won't feel as sickeningly fast, and you will want to start beefing it up. then you will drive some other car and you will feel like you are driving an RC car and that it just won't GO! then you will get back in your car and it will feel fast again! :P

//edit: btw dude get some pictures posted up man :P what color combo you got?

Thanks for those sites..the first one was really cool. And the gold rims look like crap on a white STi..but I didnt have a choice because it was the only one they had. :( Im thinking about trading rims with my friend who has a black 05 wrx, the gold will look good on his car.
