Proper launch techniques for AWD?
Proper launch techniques for AWD?
I'm at the stage where I'm willing to try a few hard launches in my wrx, but nothing too radical).
I've read a lot of stuff on AWD launching and almost everyone recommends clutch slippage at 3-5k range with various techniques.
I'm wondering if someone can shine some light on a proper awd launch techniques without radical abuse of the clutch and braking the tranny.
Something you tried that worked for you.
I'm not interested in 5-6 k dump-like clutch launches- I have some time still left on my lease;)

Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
I'll let the AWD experts weigh in on this one, but this is a good example of sacrificing some clutch to save the drivetrain, something you want to do because the WRX transmission is not as abusable as the STi 6-speed, plus the fact that a super quick AWD launch is very abusive to either.

Thanks!
That's a pretty sweet easy going launch - no thumping around:)

yup slip the clutch its cheap compared to the rest of the drivetrain

Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
Proper launching involves sticky tires. A proper launch then involves you revving up to redline, bouncing off of the rev limiter..a proper launch then involves you popping the clutch with no second thought..that is a proper launch on any car. You only slip the clutch if your tires out power your engine and you start bogging down.

Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
^he doesnt know how to drive a AWD
7k AWD clutch dumps are great, but thats how you break shit like axles, transmissions, rip the differentials off the car, etc. because you need to be making ridiculous power to spin an AWD, it will bog down off the line, so the key is controlling the clutch out. AWD will move the f**k out if you know what your doing, but if you dont, your gonna look like a retard cutting 2.something 60 foots in an AWD cars that get 1.7 60 foots on street tires right off the showroom floor

Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
How is it not an STi? It hasthe 6-speed, the gauges, the steering wheel, the wheels, the hoodscoop, etc. They probably just replaced the spoiler.

It also has the DCCD, which doesn't come with the WRX.

Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
Doubt they would replace the spoiler. Almost everyone keeps it because nothing says STi better. If anything they replaced the whole trunk. Theres still a WRX badge to match the spoiler, but no STi badge.
You have no way of knowing what gearbox that has. I dont believe he shifts past 4th. The gauges also dont mean a thing. You cant tell wether it says STi or not in the video. The only thing thats really STi is the steering wheel. And I didnt see any red stitching.
Cant know whether it has the DCCD or not. Its never shown.

Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
The revs aren't dropping far enough on the 1->2 shift to sound like the WRX 5-speed, and it needs to shift into 3rd to hit 60. Plus at the very end it says "was able to adjust the DCCD". Plus, when did the STi have red stitching?

Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
Watkins- It's an STi. The front fascia has all the STi trimmings (can't explain what they are, but I know them when I see them) It says at the end of the video that he used DCCD to get it home (transferred power to the front) All they did was change the wing.
Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
Poor Sti) Eventually it had enough.
Looks like the guy replaced the trunk to a wrx one as the wrx doesnt have DCCD for sure)
Here is a reply I got from Jpeagle dude whose video blauenlanze posted earlier here:
"I'm no expert, but basically it is just like in the video. Rev it up to get your turbo going. Somewhere between 5K and 6K rpm gradually let the clutch out while pushing harder on the gas. Let the clutch out quickly, but gradually so you don't pop it. It will pobably take you a few tries to get it right. Also, I wouldn't try this very often. Every once in a while might not hurt you clutch, but it probably punishes it pretty bad. Actually, you'll probably smell the clutch burning after you try it. Good luck. "

Re: Proper launch techniques for AWD?
everything i can see in that video indicates it's an STi. Brembos, BBS wheels, key, dash, scoop, and of course the mention of the DCCD (though there is really no such thing as putting all power forward)... looks like they just put a WRX trunk lid on there.
can't help much with the launching, i know what you've already read but never really tried very hard in my car.
