Yeah, but you've gotta compare apples to apples here. The MX-3 is an older, lighter vehicle without all the amenities and safety features of a modern day car.

But with the advances in suspension technology I would think that it should compensate for all that extra weight by now.

no, theres nothing suspension can do about a heavy car. lighter cars will handle better, they did 50 years ago, they will 50 years from now

Not quite. While weight plays a negative role increasing centrifugal force, there's a chance to negate that somewhat with better suspension that provides optimum weight trasfer for a given car.
Still heavy is heavy.
