Hi all,

I'm backtracking to post an intro since it really helps to gain more specific comments and opinions when there are questions.

So here's my info

1) I'm a HE
2) Have been driving automatics since I first got my license (10+ years)
3) Started driving manual 3 weeks back when I purchased a 2013 Subaru WRX just off the boat
4) Enjoying the new challenge.. except for the nervousness and the odd occasion when I slip the clutch just a little too long at a slightly higher rev (mmm.. burnt plastic smell)
5) I'm starting to not like the Hill Assist function in certain situations - and I can't turn it off in a WRX

Can it be disabled with an easy modification?

I'm from Ontario too and also just starting out. Awesome car, my 'achievable dream car' is a WRX STI.

I'm sure it can be, but not really worth the effort. A good bypass method is just to shift to neutral when stopped. It will generally disengage the hill assist function.

For an STI, there's a dance and show routine that needs to be done to disable it.

Welcome to the fold. Depends on how intrusive the hill hold is, it's actually a very nice feature - perhaps it's a matter of getting used to it. You are still learning the manual way and when new behavior is introduced via this feature, it's messing you up. Overall, I like the hill hold on my car and it gets used frequently on certain roads and intersections; I don't find it intrusive at all. For those familiar with the handbrake method, it works just as intuitively without me needing to grab the handbrake.

The WRX is nice, I like them a lot. About a year ago or more I was test driving a new WRX but the deal didn't happen. I did like how it drove and thought the car was very nice overall. In a few years when I switch to a different vehicle I'll be either in a Mazdaspeed3, WRX or Focus ST.

Welcome, again. I sometimes wish I had a hill-holder, but I live in the relative flat wasteland of Minneapolis-St. Paul Minnesota so it's not super important.

WRX is my dream car too. It's more dreamy once I'm proficient in manual driving.

As for Hill Assist; I just think I have to get used to it. Its nice to have in certain situations. The devil and the angel really.

When my car rolls back at an hill, my natural instincts kick in and I'll gas and slip the clutch long enough to go. But the hill assists confuses my instincts since there's no rollback until a few seconds later.

However when I'm trying to get into the garage (very slight incline) and I need to be delicate, the hill assist is great because it gives me time to delicately gas using the right pressure.

It's really not as easy to destroy your clutch as most people make you believe. Practice, practice, and practice. Most of all, try to make your shifts smooth first, and then you will naturally be able to shift quickly.
