Question on Engine Braking

Post by jcarr »

been driving my current standard shift vehicle for a couple of months. Not my primary driver but have had some seat time. A few things have come up over the last couple of months that I wanted to get some advise on.

yesterday when exiting the interstate, I put in clutch and coasted in gear until the ramp merged into another street with out a stop. I thought my revs had dropped enough to get into second gear(30mph) and I had a fair amount of engine braking when I let of the clutch and the back wheels chirped. What happened?

Thanks
Justin

Sounds like your engine speed was low - idle speed? - compared to the rpm it needed to be at to drive the car in 2nd gear. Next time, tip into the throttle a bit to raise the rpm - after a while you'll get to know about how fast it needs to run, but anything just above idle would have been an improvement.

Dodge Challenger SRT. I drive an older silverado (auto) daily and winter weather in IL has not been very good to drive the SRT much since fall.

I looked it up and 30mph in 2nd gear probably needed around 3000RPM.

Thanks guys, IIRC I was at around 1400rpm at most. That makes sense.

Perhaps the clutch engagement was a little too quick?

Honestly, 2nd is just over kill for coming off a ramp.

Coming off at 65 or whatever, ill SC into 4th from 5th, then SC into 3rd 1/2 way to a stop. Alternatively, you make double clutch into 3rd straight from 5th.

What happened? Your amazingly grabby clutch happened. I wish my clutch had enough life left to be able to spin the tires

Welcome to two weeks ago, Cos.

Since my post up there, the weather turned wintery again and I've been driving my Jeep.
