RWD in winter really isn't that bad, it just takes a little ballast and a little practice.
Completely agreed. With the right tires there is little issue. Surely there are limitations and sometimes more finesse and skill could be involved but it's fine.

Two suggestions:
Manual transfer case, manual hubs. Seems the former of the two is a bit difficult to get your hands on for some reason.
Word. Seems the electric transfer case on my '97 was its worst part, although I suspect it would have worked better if it had gotten used once in a while.

Correct. Without regular use, they tend to disagree about moving away from 2wd, so... Regular use for the electronic ones is a must.
As for the auto locking hubs being bad, they burn out. When they do so, they either stick unlocked (no success with 4wd until this is fixed) or they stick locked, a.k.a. you have a problem now.
