RITmusic2k: Yes, I am absolutely having great fun learning to drive this car and I'm quite proud of how I'm doing - I haven't rolled back into anyone on a hill yet!
don't all newer BMW's have a CDV (clutch delay valve?) that makes it pretty much impossible for you to roll back on a hill anyway?

I thought the CDV would make it more difficult to stall...I can't imagine how it prevents rollback.

CDV smooths out the shifts a little bit - the hill holding feature, on the other hand, keeps brakes engaged while you launch.

Man, I hear of a nice car and the scroll down to see all this damage! Sorry to see that but it's rather simple to fix, sans all the headaches.

You'll be back in no time. Never too late to learn manual trans.

with a CDV alone (without brake holding feature) you would just have to rev it up a bit and you could literally dump the clutch and it would look like a normal hill launch...or so i would think

don't know about the CDV, but this Z4 will definitely roll backwards on a hill......my first evening of practicing on inclines in the parking garage proved that...hope to hear from the insurance 'field rep' tomorrow...my rental is a Buick Enclave and i've already been reaching for the clutch and shifter...doesn't take long to learn that habit when driving the car has been so much fun for a couple of weeks! soon....soon...soon...

when i drive an auto i never reach for a shifter or press a clutch, it just feels different. The most annoying thing about most autos is the fact you cant control when you shift, tiptronics or w/e can but i've never driven one. Driving a manual is a more involved drive, shifting itself isn't fun to me, rev match downshifting is when driving hard... but the appeal these days is controlling how high i want the car to rev, etc...
