introductory posts SEEM easy...

Post by sasquatch »

...but lets see if my up-all-night into the early morning brain can handle it.

Well, for starters I guess, the reason I was up in the middle of the night? I was practicing my new standard shift skills! (I'm still a little paranoid of other people on the road). I'm excited, and getting the hang of it. My car is a '72 F-250, so I am having some trouble getting used to an old car AND a standard shifting, but I already like it much, much better than the automatic I practically lived in years ago. I'm still iffy in reverse, and still freaking TERRIFIED at highways with those lights that happen every so often (going from fourth down to 2nd is definitely still stressing me out, along with the thought of sudden stops and unexpected craziness from other drivers). I need to get used to clutch-gas pedal ratios and all that, too, but at least I'm not jerking the car.

Anyway, my name's Natalie, and I live in MA usually though I travel quite a bit around the country for work. I've read a bit through the forums for a little while, preening and sucking knowledge from everyone's posts, and figured I should go ahead and join up. Aside from the friend who's re-teaching me to drive right now, I don't know another soul who can drive standard, which I think is awfully sad.

I hope that's enough of an introduction, and that I don't wake up and re-read this to find that in a tired stupor I typed out two paragraphs about my love for avocados or something.

Welcome. Where in MA do you live? We have quite a few RI/MA/CT members here.

Do you know if your 1972 F250 has a synchronized transmission? If not, that's a bit more difficult to learn and requires people giving advice to take that into account.

What "lights that happen every so often" are you talking about on highways that require you to downshift 4->2?

Welcome welcome, you exquisitely-named new member! We'll need to see pictures of your truck and a blurry video of your sasquatch.

Welcome Eh? I am one of the few resident Canadians. Hope you stick around for any advice you need. Don't be afraid to ask anything.

Some of us have a mechanical aptitude (myself included) so you can ask us mechanical related questions. You have an older vehicle so that may come in handy.
Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
entering the Gnome Valley Kingdom
with tangerine trees, and marmalade porkchops.
Someone calls you, you answer with haste,
a man with a clutch in his hand.
Celefane shift boots of yellow and green, towering over your head.
Look for the man with the clutch in his hand and hes gone.
Noob in the land of Gnomes.
Noob in the land of Gnomes.
Noob in the land of Gnomes.
Follow him down to the thread by a fountain.
Where a bunch of men talk about marshmellow pie.
Everyone smiles a you drift around the corner.
Then they all get high.
Clutch holding men appear on the shore, waiting to take you away.
Noob in the land of Gnomes. Noob in the land of Gnomes. Noob in the land of Gnomes.
Picture yourself in a forum of transmissions.
With plastercine cars, and lookingglass Gnomes.
Look to the left and who do you see?
The man with a clutch in his hand.
Noob in the land of Gnomes.
Noob in the land of Gnomes.
Noob in the land of Gnomes

Yeah man. Most "Russian" vodka you can buy is real crap. You need to know what to look for.

Last night I was hammered off Patron and Jager bombs.

The lights I'm talking about are just the stoplights that I've noticed on on-ramps and highway-like situations around the country, where you have to quickly slow down with enough time to stop at the light, but then need to speed up fairly quickly thereafter. I think at this point I'm just being paranoid about every potential tricky situation.

Hmm.. I have no idea if I have synchronized transmission. I'll try to find out, I need to get the truck checked out at a mechanic just to make sure it doesn't have any hidden problems anyway, but is there a way I could tell on my own if it is synchronized?

As far as where I live, when I'm not traveling for work I usually live right in Boston, family's from the south shore. Nice to know there're a bunch of New England-ers :)
Some of us have a mechanical aptitude (myself included) so you can ask us mechanical related questions. You have an older vehicle so that may come in handy.

I am DEFINITELY going to take advantage of that! I'm just learning here, and I'm thankful that my car is older so I can at least directly see what's going on with the truck, but I also know that because it's older more might go wrong with it. I'm going on a trip from New Mexico to Louisiana soon, so I'm asking everyone all the questions I can.

I'll definitely get some pictures of the truck as soon as I can get some good ones, AND a bigfoot if I can shake it.
