Hello from Boston - another newbie
Hi, I'm new here and am amazed that this forum even exists. I know there's a chat board for everything, but this takes the cake.
Until a couple of weeks ago, I was driving an automatic 2005 Toyota Corolla LE. I've always wanted to drive a stick - just never found the opportunity. So, when my wife and I were looking for a second car, I decided to get a 2010 Honda Fit 5-speed so I would be forced to learn. I read up on driving stick shifts before taking delivery of the car and watched a bunch of YouTube tutorial videos which helped a lot. My first day driving the car was a bit daunting, but I feel very comfortable with it now. I wouldn't say it has become second nature just yet - I still have to think about what I'm doing - but I feel like I've got the basics down and am learning little nuances every day.
I've heard all the pros and cons in reference to auto vs. manual, and there are good arguments on each side. But to me, the biggest difference is that driving is a lot more fun with a stick. It forces you to engage with the car and be more attuned to the driving experience. I commute almost 40 miles round trip to and from work each day, so I spend a fair amount of time on the road. Another plus is that, when I travel abroad, I will be able to rent a car and drive whatever transmission happens to be available there (since manuals still predominate in some places).
Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and say that I look forward to learning more about stick shifts as I continue driving one.
P.S. My wife drives the Corolla now, which makes both of us happy :-)

Welcome, I love the Fit.

Welcome! You've made a good choice. I think you'll continue to love driving a manual transmission even more as you become fully comfortable. As you said, it can be a bit daunting at first, but once you really get the hang of it you'll realize it was well worth the effort.

Thanks, I live in Brookline and commute out to the burbs (reverse commute - which helps). I like the Fit a lot. What's a Viggen?

Welcome! I commute 40 miles from Attleboro to Waltham every day, unfortunately that's with the traffic.

On the topic of Saabs, my friend has told me almost every Saab he's seen has a broken headlight wiper on the passenger side. Confirm or deny.
