In your price/age range, brand name doesn't affect reliability much. By that time it's all about how it was cared for and how expensive it is to repair.

OP,

note that in most cases, an rx7 or corrado won't be driven the same way as a corolla or a civic.

i wouldn't recommend getting something old and fast/cool if you want to keep it as your daily driver. you need something that is reliable and cheap to maintain.

Welcome!

My suggestion: Early/mid 90's Civic hatch. Might be hard to come by the VX or CX since they're rated at 45+ MPG IIRC...
