Just out of curiosity, is it one of those Alfas with the shifter that is mounted almost horizontally (if you know what I mean) and comes out where the radio/ AC controls would be on a modern car? I've seen some older Alfas like that and I've always thought it looked awkward to shift.

No, it's mounted the regular way, though still in the center console.

That looks like it would make the transmission linkage very awkward with the big angle.
